Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Notre Dame College this Saturday at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium as the Falcons scored on a last second Hail Mary as the clocked expired, GSC second straight loss, falling 34-28.
The Pioneers and Falcons both missed scoring opportunities within the opening minutes of the contest as Glenville missed a 37 yard field goal, and the Falcons fumbled at the Pioneers three yard line missing on an opportunity.
Glenville State would then strike first in the second quarter as
Dante Roberts hit
Dante Absher from 23 yards out as GSC took a, 7-0 lead. However the Falcons would then score back-to-back touchdowns as Malik Grove hit Mitchell Shegos for a 74 yard touchdown at the 5:44 minute mark and then Grove hit Shegos again this time from 73 yards out at the 3:06 minute mark as the Falcons led, 14-7.
Glenville State then tied the game up at 14-14 as Roberts connected with sophomore wideout
Austin Ratliff for a 65 yard Pioneer touchdown as we headed into halftime.
The Falcons would receive the ball first in the second half however the Pioneers defense would force a punt. That punt would then lead to a 19 yard touchdown pass from GSC's
Dante Roberts to
Dante Absher, there second TD hookup of the game, as GSC took a 21-14 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff the Pioneers would force Notre Dame's Emmanuel Smith to fumble the return as
Austin Ratliff knock the ball out, as GSC's offense headed back out on the field. On the Pioneers first play after the turnover
Dante Roberts would find
David Thomas on a 21 yard touchdown pass, Roberts's fourth touchdown pass of the game, as GSC took a two touchdown lead over the Falcons, 28-14.
However the Falcons then cut into the Pioneers lead at the 5:36 minute mark of the third quarter as Malik Grove connected with Mitchell Shegos for a 54 yard touchdown, there third pitch and catch of the game, making it, 28-21.
Glenville State headed into the fourth quarter leading, 28-21. Notre Dame then tied the game up at 28-28 early in the fourth with a one yard touchdown run by DJ Greene.
With 3:27 left in the ballgame the Pioneers would drive all the way down to the Falcons 28 yard line but after an intentional grounding call on
Dante Roberts GSC would be forced to punt as Notre Dame took over with just 1:08 left to play on their own 25 yardline.
Notre Dame would drive to Glenville State's 44 yard line however only six second remained to play in the game. On third and four Notre Dame's Malik Grove would throw one up two the endzone for one last chance and BJ Baldwin would come down with the catch in the endzone as the Falcons defeated the Pioneers, 34-28 on the Hail Mary miracle.
Glenville State ran 76 plays and racked up a total of 489 yards with 325 yard in the air and 164 on the ground. Notre Dame finished the contest with 547 total yards on 77 plays with 351 in the air and 196 on the ground.
The Pioneers were flagged seven times for 76 yards while Notre Dame had six penalties for 54 yards. Notre Dame also had two turnovers in the game while Glenville State had one.
Dante Roberts threw for 325 yards as he went 28-for-42 with four touchdowns. Roberts's favorite target on the day was
Dante Absher as he caught 11 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Austin Ratliff had a breakout game at wideout as he hauled in seven catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Thomas Boles led the rushing attack for GSC as he rushed for 95 yards on 10 carries averaging 9.5 yards per carry.
Eric Kyle totted the ball five times for 54 yards.
The GSC defense was led by
Earon Settles as he racked up 12 tackles while
Marcus Umu finished the day with eight.
Notre Dame was led by quarterback Malik Grove threw for 351 yards with four touchdowns. He also rushed for 100 yards in the contest. Wideout Mitchell Shegos hauled in 11 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns.
Glenville State (3-2, (3-2)) will hit the road this Saturday, October 8
th for a big MEC showdown with the Shepherd University Rams. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
