Glenville State Falls in I-79 Barrel Classic to Alderson Broaddus

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team dropped their fourth game in a row as they fell to the Alderson Broaddus Battlers at home on Thursday night at Morris Stadium in the I-79 Barrel Classic, 19-7.

In the first quarter the Pioneers left three points on the board early when Chandler Carrera's 32-yard field goal attempt was blocked. However the Battlers could not take advantage as both teams went scoreless in the first quarter.

The Battlers would get on the board at the 14:50 minute mark with a 17-yard field goal by Tyler Schiefelbein as they took a 3-0 lead.

Later in the second quarter, Demetrius Lofton came up with a big sack and forced a fumble that was recovered by Pioneers Wesley Marsh. However, the Pioneers would throw an interception on the ensuing possession.

Then with just 2.2 seconds left till halftime, the Battlers kicked a 32-yard field goal, extending their lead to 6-0 heading to the break.

In the third quarter the Battlers would drive deep into GSC territory, but Earon Settles intercepted a pass for the Pioneers in the end zone for a touchback.

Dominique Gibson then put the Pioneers on the board from seven yards out at the 9:59 minute mark in the third as GSC took its first lead of the game, 7-6.

Later in the third the Pioneers would throw their third interception of the contest as the Battlers were able to capitalize with a 14-yard touchdown pass as Dakota Bruggeman hit Cooper Schroeder as Alderson Broaddus retook the lead, 13-7.

GSC would miss their second field goal attempt of the game late in the third as we headed into the fourth with the Battlers holding a, 13-7 lead. After the missed field goal by GSC the Battlers connected on a 26-yard touchdown pass on the following possession, extending the lead, 19-7.

The Pioneers would then put together a late drive but it would fall short at the Battlers one yard line as time expired as GSC fell, 19-7.

Glenville State ran 78 plays for 371 total yards. The Pioneers finished the game with 105 yards on the ground and 266 in the air. The Pioneers defense allowed the Battlers to gain 313 total yards on 71 plays with 98 rushing yards and 215 passing yards.

Both teams were flagged nine times with GSC racking up 94 penalty yards and AB racking up 72 penalty yards. Each team also turned the ball over three times in the game as the Pioneers had three interceptions while the Battlers had an interception and lost two fumbles.

Dominique Gibson carried the ball 13 times for GSC as he rushed for 44 yards and a touchdown, his first touchdown on the season and as a Pioneer.

Quarterback Dante Roberts went 17 of 29 for 177 yards with two interceptions before leaving the game due to an injury. Backup quarterback Ja'Quay Garmon went 6 of 14 for 89 yards and an interception.

Dante Absher was the leading receiver for the Pioneers as he caught seven passes for 65 yards while Austin Ratliff caught five passes for 70 yards.

Earon Settles led the Pioneers defense for the second straight week as he finished with nine total tackles and an interception. Linebacker Devonte Brown had nice game as he finished with eight tackles and a TFL.

Brandon Jones led the rushing attack for the Battlers as he rushed for 95 yards on 28 carries. Quarterback Dakota Bruggeman went 15 of 33 for 215 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Glenville State (3-4, 3-3) will host the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State for Homecoming next Saturday, October 22nd with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
