Pioneers Second Half Comeback Falls Short

Box Score Glenville, W.Va. - The Glenville State Pioneers would score 20 second half points but fell short to the #22 Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in the Annual " Battle of the Bit" on Thursday night in the MEC Game of the Week.

The Falcons would score first with 4:53 to go in the first quarter behind a one yard touchdown run from FSU running back Terrell Charles. Later in the first Fairmont State would look to add to their led but the GSC defense would hold strong as FSU missed a field goal attempt.

The Pioneers would tack on their first points in the second quarter behind a one yard touchdown run by Marquis Walker, his first as a Pioneer, tying it at 7-7 with 11:35 remaining till halftime.

The Falcons would strike back on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Cooper Hibbs to Fabbian Guerra as FSU led 14-7 with 7:49 remaining. The Falcons would capitalize on a late interception as Terrell Charles took it 40 yards to the endzone as FSU took a 21-7 lead with 6:03 remaining in the first half.

Glenville State was able to add on a 22 yard field goal late in the second as the Pioneers trailed the Falcons at halftime, 21-10.

In the third quarter, Hibbs would find Charles for a 13 yard touchdown pass as FSU jumped up, 28-10. The ensuing Pioneer possession resulted in a blocked punt. The following play, Terrell Charles would run in a Falcon touchdown from 11 yards as FSU increased their lead to, 35-10.

Glenville however would not give up as they were able to get back on the board behind a Dante Roberts to Dante Absher 13 yard passing touchdown. The PAT snap was botched and returned by Fairmont for two point as Fairmont State took a 37-16 lead into the fourth quarter.

GSC defensive end Wesley Marsh made a big play as he came up with an interception to give the Pioneers the ball back.  Dante Roberts would find Dante Absher again, this time an 11-yard fade route as they cut the FSU lead to, 37-23 with 12:52 to play.

Glenville State would find pay dirt again as Roberts was able to find Absher on a 15 yard corner route for their third touchdown hookup of the game cutting the Falcons lead to, 37-30 with 2:32 remaining in the game.

The Pioneers defense then came up big as they stopped the Falcons on third down And FSU then missed a field goal as GSC would get the ball back with a little over a minute left in the game. As the Pioneers were driving FSU would intercept a fourth down pass attempt and run out the clock as the Pioneers comeback would fall short, 37-30.

Glenville State racked up 413 offensive yards on 91 plays while the Pioneer defense allowed FSU to gain 401 total yards.

Signal caller Dante Roberts threw for 303 yards as he went 29-of-59 with three touchdowns but also had three interceptions.

Dante Absher had himself a great game as he caught nine passes for a game high 116 yards and three touchdowns. Austin Ratliff also hauled in nine passes for 67 yards.

Marquis Walker led the rushing attack for GSC as he totted the ball seven times for 49 yards and a touchdown. Dominique Gibson chipped in with 41 rushing yards on nine carries.

Troy Brown and Andre Dalton led the Pioneers defense as they each had seven tackles while Marcus Umu finished with six tackles.

FSU's Cooper Hibbs went 26-of-41 for 275 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Terrell Charles rushed for 149 yards on 26 carries and had three touchdowns.

The Pioneers (5-5, 5-6) season comes to an end.
