Pioneers Fall to Hilltoppers on Senior Night

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers football team fell to the West Liberty Hilltoppers at home on Thursday night in the MEC Game of the Week, 41-24. 

The Pioneers (5-5, 5-4) would put seven points on the board with 13:36 remaining in the first quarter behind a Dante Roberts to DJ Williams 23 yard touchdown pass as the Pioneers struck first.  The Hilltoppers however would answer right back from 43 yards out behind a Dakota Conwell to Anton McCallum touchdown tying the game up at, 7-7 with 12:35 to go in the first quarter.
 
The Pioneers were forced to punt on their ensuing possession but would get the ball back on a Dionne Jackson interception as GSC took over with 6:32 to play in the first. But the Pioneers would end up giving the ball back to the Hilltoppers on a fumble.
 
However West Liberty gave the ball right back as Dakota Conwell was picked off by Zack Mayes, Conwell's second interception of the first quarter. After one quarter of play it was tied up at 7-7.
 
But the Pioneers were able to convert on Mayes' interception as Chandler Carrera booted in a 41-yard field goal at the 14:56 minute mark as GSC took a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.
 
Then with 11:43 to go till halftime, GSC converted on a fourth down for a 38-yard touchdown pass, Dante Roberts to Dante Absher as the Pioneers took a 17-7 lead.
 
The Hilltoppers responded on their first play from scrimmage following the Pioneers touchdown. Dakota Conwell found Anton McCallum for a 74-yard touchdown reception, their second hookup of the game, as they pulled within three, 17-14.
 
Glenville was able to answer back, this time an eight-yard fade route from Roberts to Absher, their second hookup of the game as GSC increased their lead, 24-14 with 8:35 to go in the first half.

West Liberty responded again, this time an eight yard TD pass, Conwell to Dan Monteroso. GSC would lead 24-21 with 6:42 left in the first half.  
 
Following a Pioneer punt, Andre Dalton intercepted a Conwell pass, his third interception of the game, and returned it to the Hilltopper 38 yard line. The Pioneers would take a 24-21 lead into halftime.
 
West Liberty would open up the third quarter with a 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown as the Hilltoppers took a 28-24 lead, their first lead of the game.  
 
After that kickoff return, West Liberty would add two more scores in the third and the Hilltoppers defense would hold the Pioneers offense scoreless in the second half as they spoiled Senior Day for Glenville State defeating GSC, 41-24.
 
Glenville State racked up 479 total yards while the Pioneers defense gave up 458 total yards. Both teams had several turnovers in the game as with GSC turning it over four times with three fumbles and an interception while West Liberty had three interceptions.
 
Dante Roberts went 24-of-48 for 280 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.
 
DJ Williams racked up 107 receiving yards on seven catches and a touchdown while fellow wideout Dante Absher caught seven passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Senior running back Eric Kyle had a big game as he totted the ball 21 times for 174 yards averaging 8.3 yards per carry.
 
Defensively for GSC Earon Settles had nine total tackles while Devonte Brown racked up eight tackles. Demetrius Lofton had a nice game as he finished with seven tackles, with one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss.
 
West Liberty was led by Dakota Conwell as he went 8-for-21 with 221 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 10 times for 46 yards.
 
Glenville State (5-5, 5-4) will finish up the 2016 season on the road next Thursday, November 10th as they travel to Fairmont State University for the annual "Battle for the Bit" rivalry game. Kickoff is set for 7:10 p.m. from Duvall-Rosier Field.
