Glenville, W.Va. - GSC senior linebacker
Marcus Umu sealed the Pioneers come from behind win with a forced fumble to improve the Pioneers record to 2-0 with a 31-28 win over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
The Pioneers and Bobcats both went scoreless for the entire first quarter. The Pioneers recorded an interception by defensive back Earon Settle but on the ensuing possession, the Pioneers field goal attempt was blocked by the Bobcats.
Glenville State however would strike first with 12:36 to go in the second quarter behind a
Chandler Carrera 24 yard field goal.
Wesleyan's running back Michael Anderson put the Bobcats ahead 7-3 on a 57 yard run with 5:06 remaining in the first half. Wesleyan put seven more points on the board with 46 seconds remaining before halftime behind a 21 yard TD pass.
The Bobcats took a 14-3 lead into halftime.
Glenville would strike first in the second half behind a
Dante Roberts to
Dante Absher fade route. The Bobcats lead would be cut to 14-10 with 9:26 remaining in the third quarter. As time expired in the third quarter, QB
Dante Roberts took a QB keeper into the end zone from one yard out. Carrera PAT was good; Glenville retook the lead, 17-14.
West Virginia Wesleyan would retake the lead with 12:57 remaining in the game behind a 21 yard TD pass. Wesleyans lead was 21-17.
Glenville State would answer right back on the ensuing possession capped off with another Roberts to Absher TD hook up. The Pioneers took a 24-21 lead with 8:40 to go in the contest.
A Pioneer punt was blocked and returned for a TD midway through the fourth quarter putting the Bobcats back up, 28-24.
With 3:56 to go in the game, freshman running back
Thomas Boles III scored on a five yard scamper to give the Pioneers a 31-28 lead.
The Bobcats drove on the ensuing possession but were stopped cold on a forced fumble by
Marcus Umu that was recovered by
Earon Settles which sealed the victory for GSC.
The Pioneers amounted 499 total yards, with 296 through the air and 203 on the ground. Roberts was 33-45 for 296 yards and two TD's in the air, a rushing touchdown and an interception. The rushing attack was by committee as
Dominique Gibson lead with 18 carries for 94 yards. Senior wideout
Dante Absher had his second consecutive game with two TD receptions on seven catches for 73 yards.
Defensively, the Pioneers accounted for five takeaways including a fumble forced by Senior Linebacker
Marcus Umu. Senior
Zack Mayes lead the defense in tackles with five total tackles. Junior defensive back
Earon Settles came away with four total tackles, a big interception, and a huge fumble recovery to ice the game.
Wesleyan was lead through the air by Ryan Deal on 15-29 for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Anderson had 19 carries for 157 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats leading tackler was Tavaris Anderson who accounted for nine total tackles.
The Pioneers moved to 2-0, (2-0) following the win as West Virginia Wesleyan dropped to 0-2, (0-2). The Pioneers will be back at home next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against the Golden Eagles from the University of Charleston.
