Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers finished with a season low 304 total yards as they fell on the road, suffering their first loss this season, to the UVa-Wise Cavaliers, 26-17.

After trading punts on the first four possessions, freshman linebacker
Wil Mayes picked off a deflected UVa-Wise pass to give the Pioneers the ball at the Cavs 27 yard line. Â Following the interception,
Chandler Carrera put the Pioneers on the board with a 47-yard field goal as GSC went up 3-0 in the first. On the Cavaliers ensuing possession, Sophomore
Nick Lopez picked off a pass, his fourth in two games. The Pioneers again capitalized on the Cavaliers turnover behind a 23-yard TD pass rom
Dante Roberts to
DJ Williams. The Pioneers would take a 10-0 lead into the second quarter.

UVa-Wise was able to put seven points on the board with 6:36 remaining in the first half behind a 17 yard TD pass from  Brycen Lee to James Cousins, GSC still led 10-7. The Pioneers would turn the ball over on downs on their ensuing possessions and give the Cavaliers the ball back. Just three plays later, UVa-Wise connected on a 65-yard strike to give them a 14-10 lead. The Cavaliers would hold that 14-10 lead into halftime.

Following a Pioneer punt to start the second half, the Cavaliers scored again on a passing reception, however the PAT was blocked by the Pioneers; UVa-Wise increased their lead to 20-10.

Glenville State would punt again on their next possession, but the GSC defense also forced a UVa-Wise punt.
Giles Guy-Williams put his stamp on the contest with 9:29 remaining in the third quarter with a 61-yard punt return for a TD. The lead was cut 20-17, and would remain heading into the fourth quarter.

With 8:16 remaining in the game, UVa-Wise connected on a 96 yard passing touchdown to increase their lead 26-17, this time missing the PAT. The Pioneers would move the ensuing possession clear to the eight-yard line only to have a field goal attempt blocked. Â The Cavaliers moved the ball down the field only to throw an interception to
Dionne Jackson in the endzone. A late Pioneer field goal attempt hooked wide left and the Cavaliers kneeled out clock as they defeated the Pioneers, 26-17.

Glenville State ran 84 plays but only amounted 304 total yards while UVa-Wise ran 83 plays for 385 total yards. The Pioneers also committed seven penalties for 75 yards. Glenville State was also miserable on third-downs as they only converted 6-out-of-23.

Eric Kyle carried the ball eight times for GSC for 26 yards.

Dante Roberts went 32-for-60 for 257 yards and a touchdown.

Roberts, favorite target was
Dante Absher as he hauled in 12 catches for 113 yards while
DJ Williams caught four passes for 41 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with a knee injury.

Defensively for the Pioneers
Marcus Umu led the team in tackles with nine while
Wil Mayes finished with six tackles and an interception.

The Pioneers (3-1, 3-1), will return home next Saturday, October 1
st as they host the Falcons of Notre Dame College on Hall of Fame Weekend. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
