Glenville, W.Va. - The Glenville State Pioneer football team will hit the road this week for the first time of the 2016 season. They travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Bobcats. The first matchup between GSC and WVWC came way back in 1909 with the Bobcats holding a 41-36-2 lead in the overall series.
The Pioneers are entering the game after defeating Urbana in their season and home opener last Thursday, 44-24. GSC racked up 451 yards on 70 plays while the defense held Urbana to 251 yards on 62 plays. The Pioneers did commit 13 penalties for 105 yards in the win which will have to change in the future.
Last season in the Pioneers and Bobcats matchup it was a high scoring affair, with a total of 112 points scored, as Glenville State won at home, 64-48. That game also saw a total of 58 first downs 1,277 total yards, with GSC racking up 846 total yards.
GSC also saw former Pioneer great running back Rahmann Lee brake the MEC single game rushing record and become second in the NCAA DII Rushing yards in a single game as he ran for 412 yards and three touchdowns.
Glenville State had some big questions coming into the 2016 season especially on the offensive side of the ball with on ly one starter back from a year ago however after week one some of those questions have been answered. Junior QB
Dante Roberts had a great showing as he completed 25-of-his-35 passing attempts to go along with 303 yards, five touchdowns and an interception.
The Pioneers also saw wideout
Dante Absher pick up where he left off last season as he caught six passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns despite not playing in the second half due to injury.
DJ Williams also had a huge game for GSC as he caught seven balls for 132 yards and three touchdowns. Transfer running back
Dominique Gibson carried the ball 11 times for 77 yards in his first showing as a Pioneers.
On the defensive side of the ball
Marcus Umu was the leading tackler with seven in the game and a TFL while five other Pioneers had five or more tackles in the ball game. GSC also came away with seven total sacks as a defense for 55 yards.
West Virginia Wesleyan comes into the game after falling on the road to #4 Shepherd University this past Saturday, 27-12.
The Bobcats finished with 275 yards of total offense with 200 of that coming in the air.
QB Ryan Deal threw for 198 yards on 15-0f-30 while Marcus Smith hauled in four catches for 113 yards. West Virginia Wesleyan's defense was led by Nate Simmons as he finished with nine total tackles. The Bobcat defense also had three sacks on the day.
Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday from Cebe Ross Field.
