Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers had a great showing on Sunday afternoon as they took the #4 Hilltoppers of West Liberty to overtime but came up short falling by three, 108-105.
Glenville State (6-5, 3-4) fell behind early as the Hilltoppers took an 18 point lead 36-18 at the 8:21 minute mark of the first half. However GSC then made a late run in the half as they cut West Liberty's lead to just seven, 50-43 at halftime.
In the second half West Liberty would build another large lead this time leading by 16 points, 70-54 with 13:25 left in the game. But again the Pioneers never gave up and made a 33-16 run as they took a one point lead 87-86 with 2:52 left to play.
West Liberty then tied it up at 87 all at the 2:28 minute mark but GSC then took a two point lead off of a great drive and finish by
Andrew Johnson as the Pioneers led 89-87, again though the Hilltoppers would knot it up at 89 all with just over a minute left.
Each team would get another possession to try and win it but neither team could get it to fall as we headed into overtime.
In OT West Liberty came out hot and jumped out to a six point lead twice but twice GSC would make a run. With just 10 seconds to play West Liberty's Devin Hoehn would connect on two free-throws putting the Hilltoppers up four, 107-103.
Terry Davis Jr. would answer back for the Pioneers pulling them with two, 105-107 with just six seconds. GSC then committed a foul and sent Devin Hoehn to the line. Hoehn made just 1-of-2 free-throws as they led 108-105.
Glenville State would get it down the floor but not have a clean shot as they fell by just three points.
The Pioneers won the shooting battle as they shot 53 percent from the floor and 48 percent from deep while West Liberty shot 44 percent from the field and 37 percent from behind the arc.
Glenville State got two great performances from
Terry Davis Jr. and
Brett Morris as they each posted double-doubles. Both scored 26 points while Davis Jr. had 10 rebounds and Morris grabbed 15 rebounds and had five blocks.
Jon Dunmyer scored 22 points hitting 6-of-8 from deep while
Darhius Nunn chipped in with 13 points and five assists.
Andrew Johnson scored 13 points off the bench for GSC.
West Liberty (12-1, 6-1) had five players score in double figures with Dan Monteroso leading the way with 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Glenville State will return to action on Tuesday, January 10
th as they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off with the Cardinals.
