Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers hosted rival Fairmont State University in the annual 'Battle for the Bit' Saturday on GSC's Homecoming.
Four quarters would not be enough for either team but FSU's Sam Keil drilled a 34 yard field goal in overtime as he helped the Fighting Falcons escape Glenville with an 18-15 win. Â
Glenville State (3-5, 2-5) didn't give up a touchdown in the contest while they racked up 306 total yards on offense while Fairmont State (5-3, 5-2) had 249 total yards on offense and scored six total field goals in the win.
Fairmont State took the early 3-0 lead over GSC at the 2:15 minute mark of the first quarter driving 92 yards on 19 plays as Sam Keil hit a 21 yard field goal, which was the only score of the first quarter.
Glenville State answered back on their next possession as
Dominique Gibson scored from four yards out, the only touchdown of the afternoon for either team, as the Pioneers took a 6-3 lead at the 13:51 minute mark of the second quarter. GSC's point-after-attempt was missed.
The Fighting Falcons added another field goal at the 6:09 minute mark, this time from 46 yards out, as they tied the game up at 6-6. That score would hold as we headed to halftime.
Fairmont State broke the tie at the 9:09 minute mark of the third as Sam Keil hit his third field goal of the game from 25 yards as the Fighting Falcons led 9-6. Again the Pioneers offense would answer as
Kelvin Flores hit a 24 yard field goal with 4:22 left in the third as GSC tied it up at 9-9.
Fairmont State added one more field goal in the third, from 37 yards out, as they took a 12-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
The defense for FSU would step up and get the ball back and add their fifth field goal of the game from 34 yards as they led GSC 15-9 with 13:33 to play in the game.
Glenville State's offense would come up big and get
Kelvin Flores into field goal range twice as he netted a 21 yard field at the 7:26 minute mark making it 15-12, and then hit a 34 yarder as they Pioneers tied it up at 15-15 as we headed into overtime.
Fairmont State won the toss and would elect to go on defense first as the Pioneers offense took the field. Glenville State started at the FSU 25 yard-line and could only gain as they took it to the Fighting Falcons 24 yard line facing a fourth down. Glenville State would attempt a 41 yard field goal but it would fall short as FSU took over.
The Fighting Falcons then started at the GSC 25 yard-line and only needed a field goal to win. Fairmont State drove down to the Pioneers 17 yard line. FSU then attempted a 34 yard field goal as Sam Keil sent it through the up rights, hitting his sixth field goal of the day, as he ended the tie and helped the Fighting Falcons squeak by the Pioneers, 18-15.
Glenville State tallied 18 first downs while Fairmont State gained 19 first downs in the contest. The Pioneers were perfect in the red-zone as they went 4-of-4 while FSU finished 6-of-7 in the red-zone.
The Pioneers were flagged 11 times for 89 yards while Fighting Falcons had 65 penalties yards on six flags. FSU also had a big advantage in time of possession as they held it for 34:39 while GSC had it for 25:21.
Jaylen McNair threw for 202 yards as he went 16-for-30 with an interception.
Austin Ratliff hauled in five passes for 67 yards while
Isaac Myers had a big day catching five passes for 52 yards.
Dominique Gibson rushed for a game high 54 yard on 16 carriers and had the only touchdown of the afternoon.
Defensively for GSC,
Andre Dalton led the team with 12 total tackles and two pass break-ups while
Tristin Freeman finished with 10 total tackles.
Fairmont State's quarterback Takwan Crews-Naylor went 19-for-33 for 178 yards while Laurence King caught six passes for 61 yards.
Terrell Charles carried the ball 23 times for 31 total yards.
Place Kicker Sam Keil went 6-for-6 on the day and accounted for all 18 points for FSU. For the Fighting Falcons defense Marcus Porter and Naiquan Thomas each had seven tackles on the day.
Glenville State (3-5, 2-5) hits the road next Saturday, October 28
th as they travel to Urbana University for a 1 p.m. kick-off with the Blue Knights.
