Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers fell on the road last Saturday to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State, 34-28. GSC (1-4, 0-4) are still looking for their first MEC Conference win of the season as well as their first home victory of 2017.
This week the Pioneers will return to the confines of I.L. & Morris Stadium after being on the road for the last two weeks as they host the Concord University Mountain Lions at 12 p.m.
In the matchup with WV State, Glenville State had a late chance to win the game as they drove down to the Yellow Jacket's 25 yard line but could not convert a fourth and 11 as West Virginia State University (2-3, 2-3) held on to the victory.
Glenville State gained 358 total yards on 81 plays while West Virginia State ran 67 plays and racked up 381 total yards. The Pioneers had a nice day on the ground as they racked up 195 yards rushing.
The Pioneers were 8-of-18 on third downs while the Yellow Jackets were 10-of-15. Both teams were perfect in the redzone while GSC was 4-for-4 and WVSU went 3-of-3. Both teams racked up the penalties. Glenville State was flagged 16 times for 103 yards and West Virginia State was flagged 10 times for 89 yards.
Freshman quarterback
Jaylen McNair threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns as he went 16-for-35 on the day with his favorite target being
DJ Williams as he caught seven passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Dominique Gibson led the rushing attack for GSC as he carried the ball 30 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns while freshman Trevor Smith rushed for 72 yards on 12 carries.
For the Pioneers defense,
Tristin Freeman led the team with eight tackles and an interception while
Cory Roberts and
Earon Settles each had seven tackles.
The GSC wide receivers have been as solid as they come this year in
Javon Butler and
DJ Williams. Both are ranked nationally in Receiving TD's with Butler ranking 11
th and Williams ranking 23
rd.
Concord University comes into the matchup after falling to No. 3 Shepherd on Saturday, 49-20. The Rams held the Mountain Lions to just 16 yards rushing on the day while piling up 573 offensive yards over the course of the contest.
Cam Reynolds and Ponce DeLeon each recorded six tackles for Shepherd with five solo stops apiece. Zach Malone tallied eight tackles for the Mountain Lions (five solo). Concord recorded 290 offensive yards on the day with 274 in the air.
Since 2000, GSC is 12-4 against Concord and from 2001 to 2009 they defeated the Mountain Lions nine straight times. Since both team joined the MEC GSC is 2-1 against Concord with the two teams not playing in the league's inaugural year (2013). The Pioneers defeated the Mountain Lions last season on the road 19-8.
