Glenville, W.Va. - The Glenville State Pioneers went on the road and spoiled Homecoming for the Blue Knights of Urbana University as they came away with a 20 point win, 34-14. The win was the fourth of the season for the Pioneers.
This week they return home to Morris Stadium, in their final home game of 2017, as they host West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats at 12 p.m. this Saturday, November 4
th on Senior Day.
Against Urbana last week, Glenville State (4-5, 3-5) had a big day offensively as they racked up 358 total yards on 72 plays which led to their fourth win of the season while Urbana (3-6, 2-6) finished with 228 yards on 65 plays.
Glenville State rushed for 159 yards on 35 carriers while the Pioneer defense only gave up 45 rushing yards to the Blue Knights. The Pioneers were 8-of-16 on third down and 1-of-1 on fourth down while Urbana went 6-of-15 on third down and 1-of-3 on fourth down conversions. Glenville State was also perfect in the redzone as they went 3-for-3.
Glenville State turned the ball over two times while Urbana gave it away five times with three fumbles and two interceptions.
Freshman quarterback
Jaylen McNair went 20-of-37 for 199 yards and three touchdowns but had two interceptions.
Javon Butler hauled in six passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns while
Isaac Myers had the other touchdown catch as he finished with three catches for 17 yards.
Dominique Gibson led the ground attack as he carried the ball 21 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Pioneers defense,
Wil Mayes led the team with nine total tackles while
Cory Roberts finished with eight tackles and an interception. Also for GSC,
Andre Dalton had five tackles to go along with a fumble recovery and an interception.
West Virginia Wesleyan comes into the game after falling at home to No. 2 Shepherd University 45-14.
WVWC's Ryan Deal completed 18-of-35 pass attempts for 280 yards and two scores. Kenny Lewis Jr. compiled 72 receiving yards with five receptions. Nelson tallied 47 receiving yards on the afternoon with Linzy pacing the Bobcats with 87 yards on three receptions.
GSC holds a 12-5 record over the Bobcats since 2000 and defeated WVWC six straight years from 2004 to 2009. GSC is 3-1 against WVWC since joining the MEC. In the Pioneers and Bobcats matchup in 2015 it had the most points combined between two MEC schools with 112 total points. GSC went on to win that game 64-48. GSC also won last season game at WVWC by a final of, 31-28.
To show his appreciation to Glenville State College's loyal supporters and fans, President Dr. Tracy L. Pellett is waiving the cost of admission and inviting everyone in the surrounding community to attend the Pioneer Football game on Saturday. This will be Senior Day for the Pioneers, the last home football game of the season, and GSC will host the WV Wesleyan Bobcats at Morris Stadium for a noon kickoff.
