Lady Pioneers Victorious on the Road, Defeats Wheeling Jesuit

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers basketball team went on the road Monday night and picked up their second conference victory as they defeated the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit University, 103-80.

Glenville State (3-1, 2-0) scored 100 points for the first time this season as they shot 48 percent from the floor and 42 percent from deep hitting a season high 20 three-pointers while Wheeling Jesuit (1-4, 0-2)shot 37 percent from the floor and 33 percent from deep hitting just 5-of-15 three's.

In the first quarter the Cardinals built a seven point lead at 14-6 at the 6:49 minute mark led by Mariah Callen as she scored eight of the 14 points for Wheeling Jesuit. Later in the quarter with 1:09 to play the Cardinals led by 10 points at 23-13 and eventually took a 24-15 lead after one over the Lady Pioneers.

Glenville State came up with a huge run in the second quarter as they outscored Wheeling Jesuit 16-7, behind four three-pointers, as they tied the game up at 31-31 with 4:41 to play till halftime. The Lady Pioneers then ended the half on a 15-6 run as they took a nine point lead into halftime over Wheeling Jesuit, 46-37.

In the third quarter the Lady Pioneers only outscored the Cardinals by two points at 29-27 but still held an 11 point lead, 75-64.

In the fourth it was all GSC as they outscored WJU 28-16 as they claimed the 23 point win, 103-80.

The Lady Pioneers scored 27 points off of the Cardinals 21 turnovers while WJU scored 20 points off of 20 turnovers by GSC. Glenville State's largest lead of the game was 25 points while the Cardinals were 11 points.

The Lady Pioneers had five players post double figures with Bhera Griffin and Julie Bishop both scoring 19 points each. Griffin also had three steals and four assists while Bishop went 6-of-14 from deep and dished out three assists.

Courtney Davis and Paris McLeod both chipped in with 12 points each while Davis grabbed a game high 14 rebounds as she posted a double-double. McLeod now has scored 1,000 points in her GSC career. Kristen DesRocher scored 10 points in the win and pulled down eight boards.

Wheeling Jesuit was led by Chenelle Moore as she posted a double-double as she scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Glenville State (3-1, 2-0) will return to action this Wednesday, November 22nd as they travel to take on Saginaw Valley at 1 p.m. on a neutral site at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio.
