Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers were plagued by turnovers as they fell to the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Senior Day at Morris Stadium, 27-20.
Glenville State (4-6, 3-6) outgained West Virginia Wesleyan (5-5, 5-4) on offense as they totaled 365 total yards with 228 on the ground while the Bobcats totaled 335 yards on the afternoon.
West Virginia Wesleyan would strike first just 28 seconds into the contest as Ryan Deal hit John Goldschrafe for a 55 yard touchdown as they took a 7-0 lead.
Glenville State answered back at the 10:03 minute mark of the first quarter as
Dominique Gibson scored from one yard out as the Pioneers tied it up at 7-7.
The Bobcats retook the lead at the 9:08 minute mark in the first as Ryan Deal hit Kam Brooks for a 71 yards touchdown as they went back up 14-7. WVWC then added to its lead as Tra Jackson scored on a one yard rush as the Bobcats held a 21-7 lead.
The Pioneers cut into the Bobcats lead with 1:10 left in the first as
Kelvin Flores hit a 24 yard field goal making it, 21-10.
Neither team would score in the second quarter as West Virginia Wesleyan took the 21-10 lead into halftime.
Glenville State would open up the third quarter with the ball however the Pioneers would fumble the kickoff return as they gave it back to the Bobcats. However WVWC could not convert the turnover into points as they missed a 30 yard field goal as they gave the ball right back to GSC.
Glenville State found the endzone at the 6:01 mark of the third as
Dominique Gibson scored his second touchdown of the game, another one yard run, as the Pioneers trailed by four, 21-17.
The Pioneers then pulled within one, 21-20 late in the third as Flores nailed his second field goal of the day this one coming from 21 yards out.
The Bobcats then stretched their lead to 27-20 late in the fourth as Tra Jackson scored on a two run however WVWC would miss the PAT.
Glenville State had a chance as they started their drive on their own 10 yard line with 4:48 to play. The Pioneers then drove down to the Bobcats 35 yard-line but GSC's
Jaylen McNair would throw an interception as the Pioneers fell, 27-20.
The Pioneers had 28 total first downs to the Bobcats 15. Glenville State was flagged eight times for 64 yards while West Virginia Wesleyan was flagged 11 times for 91 yards.
GSC also went 10-of-17 on third down conversions while WVWC finished just 4-of-14.
Jaylen McNair finished the day 16-of-30 for 137 yards and had four costly interceptions.
Austin Ratliff was the team's leading receiver as he caught six passes for 46 yards.
Dominique Gibson had a great day on the ground as he rushed for 119 yard to go with two touchdowns.
Thomas Boles chipped in with 69 rushing yards on 13 carries for GSC.
Defensively
Cory Roberts led the Pioneers with eight tackles while
Wil Mayes had six tackles and a forced fumble.
West Virginia Wesleyan was led by Ryan Deal as he went 13-of-25 for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Gabriel Moultrie led the Bobcats defense with 11 total tackles.
Glenville State (4-6, 3-6) will hit the road for their final game of the 2017 season on Saturday, November 11
th as they travel to the University of Charleston for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Golden Eagles.
