Lady Pioneers Fall in MEC Quarterfinals

Glenville, W.Va. – The #1 seeded Glenville State Lady Pioneers fell to the #8 seeded University of Charleston Golden Eagles on Thursday night in the MEC quarterfinals.

Glenville State got off to a great start and started the game on a 10-0 run. The Lady Pioneers then ended the first quarter on a 13-4 run as they held a 28-13 lead over the Golden Eagles after one.

However the momentum changed in the second quarter as the University of Charleston got back into the game outscoring Glenville State 15-4 as GSC took just a four point lead into halftime 32-28.

In the second half the Golden Eagles would use that momentum from the second quarter and again outscored the Lady Pioneers 20 to 11 in the third quarter as Charleston took a five point lead into the fourth quarter 48-43.

In the fourth the scoring woes continued for GSC as UC outscored the Lady Pioneers 17 to 14 as they pulled off the upset over GSC 65-57.

The Lady Pioneers really struggled scoring, after scoring 28 first quarter points GSC only scored 29 points in the rest of the game. Glenville State also had ruff night shooting the ball as they hit just 18-of-81 shots from the floor for 22 percent and went just 5-of-38 from deep for 13 percent.

GSC forced 23 turnovers in the game and scored 19 points off of them. The Lady Pioneers also outscored the Golden Eagles in the paint 26 to 20.

Charleston scored 31of their 65 points from the free-throw line as they went 31-for-39 on the night.

MEC Player of the Year Paris McLeod scored 17 points for GSC to go with seven rebounds and four steals. The Lady Pioneers had just one other player in double figures with Courtney Davis scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Charleston was led by Jordyn Peck as she had a game-high 21 points while Octavia Loll chipped in with 16 points.

Glenville State will now wait and see if they will be selected to the NCAA DII Women's Basketball Tournament. The selection show is this Sunday, March 5th at 10:00 p.m. and can be viewed here   http://www.ncaa.com/live/player?vid=2017/2807&date=2017/03/05)
