Glenville, W.Va. - The Pioneers open up the 2017 season at home on Thursday, August 31st at 7:06 p.m. under the lights against the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise.
GSC will have a new head coach at the helm this season in
Eric Smith. Smith has been with the Pioneers since 2011 as the offense coordinator.
This is the only Thursday night game for the Pioneers this season. Glenville State is also 6-4 since 2007 in season opening contest.
This marks the first time since joining the MEC the Pioneers will open the season up against the Cavaliers.
GSC holds the series advantage since 2013 and are 3-1 against UVa-Wise. However, last season's matchup at UVa-Wise saw the Pioneers suffer a 26-17 loss. It was the first time GSC fell to the Cavaliers.
Last season's loss to UVa-Wise was the first loss of the 2016 season as they then dropped their next three contests.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the second quarter however the Cavaliers outscored GSC 21-7 in the second half. UVa-Wise racked up 385 total yards on offense while Glenville State finished with 304 total yards.
GSC won the time of possession 32:22 to 27:38 however the Pioneers committed three turnovers (all interceptions) while the Cavaliers didn't have any.

Dominique Gibson carried the ball 8 times for 15 yards while
Thomas Boles rushed for 12 yards on 6 carriers. Quarterback
Dante Roberts threw for 257 yards completing 32-of-60 with a touchdown.
Wide Receiver
DJ Williams caught four passes for 41 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game due to an injury.
UVa-Wise's QB Brycen Lee threw for 346 yards and 4 touchdowns competing 24-of-51 passes. Wide Receiver due and brothers James Cousins and Jacob Cousins combined for eight catches for 242 yards and 3 touchdowns. Â
It also Kids night at Morris Stadium all children wearing their youth football jersey or cheerleading outfit will get admission into the game.Â
