Pioneers Travel to Alderson Broaddus in Week Four

Glenville, W.Va. - The Glenville State Pioneers are still looking for their first victory of the 2017 season. The last time the Pioneers started 0-3 (0-3 MEC) was back in 2014. Last week GSC had a great performance at home despite coming up short against No. 4 Shepherd University, 42-34. This week GSC hits the road as they travel to Alderson Broaddus for a non-conference game with the Battlers in the I-79 Barrel Classic.

In that matchup last week with the Rams, Glenville State (0-3, 0-3) would build a two touchdown lead over Shepherd (2-0, 2-0) late in the third quarter however the Rams would score the last 21 points of the contest as they survived the Pioneers.

Glenville State tallied 356 total yards on 62 plays while the Pioneer defense allowed the Rams 541 total yards on 80 plays. Shepherd had 10 more first downs in the contest as they had 28 in the game while GSC had 18 first downs.

Both teams racked up the penalties as Shepherd had 11 for 108 yards and Glenville State was flagged eight times for 86 yards.

True-freshman Jaylen McNair got his first career start at QB for the injured Ja'Quay Garmon. McNair went 20-of-31 for 298 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Javon Butler was his favorite target hauling in five receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns while Damon Robinson caught just one pass, however for 81 yards and a touchdown. Austin Ratliff and Giles Guy-Williams both caught five pass each while Ratliff tallied 51 yards and Guy-Williams had 24 yards.

Dominique Gibson led the Pioneer rushing attack as he totted the ball 10 times for 56 yards.

Earon Settles racked up 12 total tackles for the Pioneer defense while Cory Roberts chipped in with seven. Quintavius Twine finished the day with six total tackles and an interception while Keevin Gillard also had an interception in the game.

Alderson Broaddus (1-2) comes into the matchup after picking up their first victory of 2017 Saturday against Lincoln University, 48-10. This is the third meeting between the Pioneers and Battlers. The series is tied at 1-1 with each team picking up a win on the road.

The first matchup was back in 2015 with the Pioneers walking away with the 48-30 road victory. In 2016 the Battlers defeat GSC 19-7 at Morris Stadium.

In last year's matchup, Glenville State ran 78 plays for 371 total yards. The Pioneers finished the game with 105 yards on the ground and 266 in the air. The Pioneers defense allowed the Battlers to gain 313 total yards on 71 plays with 98 rushing yards and 215 passing yards. Both teams were flagged nine times with GSC racking up 94 penalty yards and AB racking up 72 penalty yards. Each team also turned the ball over three times in the game as the Pioneers had three interceptions while the Battlers had an interception and lost two fumbles.

Dominique Gibson carried the ball 13 times for GSC as he rushed for 44 yards and a touchdown, his first touchdown on the season and as a Pioneer.

Quarterback Ja'Quay Garmon went 6 of 14 for 89 yards and an interception. Dante Absher was the leading receiver for the Pioneers as he caught seven passes for 65 yards while Austin Ratliff caught five passes for 70 yards.

Earon Settles led the Pioneers defense for the second straight week as he finished with nine total tackles and an interception. Linebacker Devonte Brown had nice game as he finished with eight tackles and a TFL.

Brandon Jones led the rushing attack for the Battlers as he rushed for 95 yards on 28 carries. Quarterback Dakota Bruggeman went 15 of 33 for 215 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Kick-off is set for 12:00 p.m. between the Pioneers and Battlers from Multi-Sport Performance Stadium.
