Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team picked up their first win of the 2017 season last Saturday as they defeated the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers, 47-42, in the I-79 Barrel Classic. It was also the first career victory for first-year head coach
Eric Smith.
This week the Pioneers (1-3, 0-3) are on the road again as they travel to West Virginia State University for a 1:30 p.m. matchup with the Yellow Jackets. Despite GSC picking up their first win last week they are still in search for their first conference victory.
In the game last week with Alderson Broaddus, Glenville State racked up 410 total yards in the contest behind freshman quarterback
Jaylen McNair while allowing Alderson Broaddus to gain 354 yards.
Freshman quarterback
Jaylen McNair picked up his first career victory on the same day he got his first career road start. McNair, went 17-of-28 for 243 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.
DJ Williams was his favorite target as he hauled in six passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns.
Dominique Gibson led the ground attack as he carried the ball 26 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns while
Trevon Smith totted it nine times for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Earon Settles led the Pioneer defense with 11 total tackles while
Cory Roberts finished with nine tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss.
Lamar Daniel had two big sacks on the day.
West Virginia State (1-3, 1-3) comes into the game after falling on the road last week to No. 4 Shepherd University, 56-41. Matt Kinnick was 32-51 with 371 yards and three touchdowns in the setback for West Virginia State. Tyrell Henderon hauled in 11 passes for 166 yards and one score while Gray notched three receptions for 61 yards and one touchdown. Calil Wilkins had 16 carries for 91 yards and one touchdown in the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
The Pioneers hold the series advantage over West Virginia State 12-5 dating back to 2000. GSC also won seven straight games over WVSU from 2008 to 2014. Glenville State is 3-1 against West Virginia State since joining the MEC and picked up a 43-26 home win last season.
The Pioneers are 24th in the country in Passing Offense with 288.8 ypg and are 22nd in Passing Yards per Completion with 14.81 per completion. Wide Receiver
Javon Butler is 4th in the country in Receiving Touchdowns with six and is 7th in Yards per Receptions with 25.50.
Cory Roberts is 7th in the country in Solo Tackles with 31 so far this season.
Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. from Institute, W.Va. from Larkin Field at Dickerson Stadium.
