Pioneer Football Travels to Notre Dame College in Week Two

Glenville, W.Va. – The Pioneers opened up the 2017 season at home under the lights on Thursday but came up short as they fell to the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise 41-29, this week they hit the road for the first time as they travel to Notre Dame College for a 12 p.m. kickoff with the Falcons.

The last time the Pioneers (0-1, 0-1) lost their season opener was back in 2014 (Concord).

In last Thursday's matchup Glenville State would squander away an early nine point lead in the loss.

Glenville State had 421 total yards of offense with 311 in the air and 110 on the ground. Quarterback Ja'Quay Garmon was 16-of-50 on the night for 311 yards, four touchdowns but had two costly interceptions.

Javon Butler led the receiving corps with three receptions for 128 yards and three TD's while DJ Williams also contributed eight receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown. After Butler's performance in week onr he ranks 1st in Receiving TD's, 20th in Receiving Yards, 20th in Receiving Yards Per Game, 2nd in Scoring, 3rd in Total TD's, and 2nd in Yards Per Reception in NCAA DII.
On the ground, Dominique Gibson led GSC with 15 carries for 68 yards. For the GSC defense, Corey Roberts paced the Pioneers with 12 total tackles, while Andre Dalton and Quintavius Twine each contributed nine tackles.

Notre Dame comes into the matchup after falling on the road to Shepherd 54-49, which was part of the NCAA Division II Showcase and shown on ESPN3. The Falcons racked up 389 yards while the defense allowed Shepherd to gain 561 yards of total offense on 80 plays. Notre Dame also had two costly fumbles both which Shepherd recovered.
Malik Grove was 21-of-29 for 216 yards and three scores. D.J. Greene rushed 22 times for 121 yards and two more scores. Emmanuel Smith hauled in 14 passes for 98 yards and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Tay Johnson had two touchdown catches for the Falcons.

Last season's matchup between Glenville State and Notre Dame was a thriller, with 1:08 left Notre Dame would start on their own 25 yard line and drive to the Pioneers 44 yard line with just six second to play. Notre Dame's Malik Grove would throw one up two the endzone for one last chance and BJ Baldwin would come down with the catch in the endzone as the Falcons defeated the Pioneers, 34-28 on the Hail Mary miracle.

Last year in the contest Glenville State ran 76 plays and racked up a total of 489 yards with 325 yard in the air and 164 on the ground. Notre Dame finished the contest with 547 total yards on 77 plays with 351 in the air and 196 on the ground.

Kickoff between Glenville State and Notre Dame is set for 12:00 p.m. from Mueller Field.
