Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State men's basketball team started 2018 the right way as they picked up a three point victory over Notre Dame College 82-79. The win is the second straight for the Pioneers after they beat Salem International last Saturday.
Glenville State (2-10, 1-6) shot 45 percent from the floor while Notre Dame (3-10, 1-6) shot 39 percent from the field.
The Pioneers jumped out to a five point lead at 9-4 at the 16:32 minute mark of the first half. However Notre Dame then outscored GSC 16-6 as they took a five point lead 20-15 with 7:57 to play till intermission.
Glenville State ended the first half on a 22-13 run as they took a four point lead into halftime at 37-33.
In the second half GSC made some separation at the 16:19 minute mark as hit three straight three-pointers as they took a nine point lead 52-43 with 14:57 to play. GSC then stretched their lead to 14 points at 59-45 with 13:22 on the clock.
Notre Dame would not go away as they cut the Pioneers lead to single digits, six points, 67-59 with 8:16 left to play. GSC answered as they built another 11 point lead at 71-60 with under five minutes to play.
Again Notre Dame made a run outscoring Glenville State 13-4 as the Falcons pulled within two points of the Pioneers 75-73 with 1:44 left in the contest. GSC's
Andrew Johnson would answer back with a huge three-pointer as GSC went back up by five points, 78-73.
Notre Dame then hit 1-of-2 free throws and then came away with a steal.That steal would lead to a three-pointer by the Falcons with 1:02 on the clock as they made it just a one point game, 78-77.
However a layup by
Marcus Schofield and two made free throws by
Elisha Mayberry iced the game for the Pioneers as they won their second straight 82-79.
Glenville State won the rebounding battle as they out rebounded the Falcons by six, 43 to 37.
The Pioneers also dominated the Falcons in the paint outscoring them 37 to 14 in the game. Glenville State received a big lift from the Pioneer bench as they accounted for 50 points on the night.
Glenville State had three players post double figures with
Jon Dunmyer leading the way with 19 points as he went 6-for-11 from the floor to go along with six rebounds and a team high five assists.
Darhius Nunn scored 15 points in the victory while
Elisha Mayberry chipped in with 13 points.
Dwayne Chastain Jr. scored all of his eight points in the first half while
Marcus Schofield pulled down a game high 10 rebounds to go with four points.
Notre Dame was led by Drew Scarberry as he scored a game high 20 points, with all of his points coming from behind the three-point line, finishing 6-of-13 from deep. Kyauta Taylor scored 15 points and had six assists while Oliver Megins chipped in with 12 points.
Glenville State (2-10, 1-6) will host Urbana University at 4:00 p.m. this Saturday, January 4
th from the Waco Center.
