Fairmont, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team suffered a tough loss on the road Saturday to the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State University, 52-9, in the annual "Battle for the Bit" rivalry.
Glenville State (3-5, 3-4) ran 44 total plays for 198 yards while Fairmont State (6-2, 5-2) racked up a total of 570 yards on 73 total plays.
The first quarter of action was all FSU. After GSC received the opening kickoff the Fighting Falcons defense forced a three-and-out. FSU's offense then took over at their own 48 yard line after a 50 yard punt from GSC's
Justin Watts.
Fairmont State then drove 52 yards on 10 plays as Takwan Crews-Naylor hit Tyree Randolph for a two-yard pitch and catch as FSU took a 7-0 lead.
Glenville State then gave the ball right back to Fairmont State as
Wellestey Madurie fumbled the kickoff return as FSU recovered it at the GSC 28 yard line. The Fighting Falcons then turned the turnover into points as Rakeem Darden scored on a 13 yard rush as FSU led 14-0 with 3:14 in the quarter.
After a fabulous kickoff return into FSU territory the Pioneers next offensive possession saw just one play as
Jaylen McNair's pass was intercepted by Brandon Ruffin. It then took Fairmont State just three plays as they went 91 yards as Takwan Crews-Naylor hit Javon Hayes on a 53 yard touchdown pass as GSC trailed, 21-0 as they first quarter ended.
The first quarter saw GSC's offense run just nine total plays while committing two turnovers.
In the second, again FSU found the endzone three times. Tyree Randolph scored on a 25 yard rush; Takwan Crews-Naylor hit Shawn Harris on a 77 yard touchdown pass. Crews-Naylor later hit Alquwan Vickers from 31 yards out as the Pioneers found themselves trailing, 42-0 at halftime.
The Pioneers defense came up with a big stop on the first possession of the third as they got the ball back. However GSC's drive would stall as they punted the ball back FSU.
Fairmont State's second possession of the third saw them go 43 yards on six plays as Khalik Hamlin scored on a 10 yard scamper as GSC fell behind, 49-0 with 7:21 to play in the quarter.
Glenville State found the endzone with just 1:13 to play. They would drive 80 yards on five plays as
Jaylen McNair hit
Gary Bacon from 37 yards out. The PAT attempt would fail as GSC trailed 49-6 as we headed into the fourth.
The Fighting Falcons added a 38 yard field goal early in the quarter as they now led, 52-6.
The Pioneers would still fight on and they would add a 37 yard field goal with 8:47 to play in the game as they made it, 52-9.
The field goal by GSC would be the last scoring of the contest as FSU defeated the Pioneers, 52-9.
Glenville State had 10 first downs on the day while Fairmont State tallied 24 first downs.
On the ground the Pioneers rushed for 95 yards and had 103 passing yards while the Fighting Falcons ran for 271 yards and threw for 302 passing yards. FSU averaged 7.96 yards per play while GSC averaged 4.50 yards.
Glenville State committed three turnovers on the day as they lost two fumbles and threw an interception while Fairmont State didn't commit a turnover.
The Pioneers were only penalized two times for 20 yards while FSU was flagged seven times for 65 yards.
Quarterback
Jaylen McNair went 10-for-22 for 103 yards with and touchdown and an interception.
Javon Butler was McNair's favorite target as he hauled in four passes for 53 yards.
Gary Bacon caught just one pass, a 37 yard touchdown.
J'Quan Anderson totted the ball 18 times for 91 yards.
Defensively for the Pioneers,
Samuel Thomas led all tacklers on the afternoon with 13 total.
Dominic Cizauskas finished with 12 tackles while
Wil Mayes finished with 11 on the day.
Takwan Crew-Naylor went 17-of-21 for 301 yards and threw four touchdowns for FSU.
Shawn Harris caught three passes for 125 yards and TD while Alquawn Vickers hauled in four passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Javon Hayes and Tyree Randolph each caught a touchdown pass for FSU.
Khalik Hamlin led the rushing attack as he carried the ball 21 times for 119 yards.
Trevon Shorts had four tackles for the Fighting Falcons defense while Jerry Iweh had four total tackles and a tackle for loss. Brandon Ruffin had an interception for the Fighting Falcons.
Glenville State (3-5, 3-4) will return home next Saturday, October 27
th as they host the Blue Knights of Urbana University at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
