Pioneers Set for Home Matchup with Blue Knights of Urbana in Week Nine

Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer football team will return home in week nine of the season as they host the Urbana University Blue Knights at 12 p.m. from I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium.

Glenville State (3-5, 3-4) suffered a tough loss on the road Saturday to the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State University, 52-9, in the annual "Battle for the Bit" rivalry.

GSC ran 44 total plays for 198 yards while Fairmont State (6-2, 5-2) racked up a total of 570 yards on 73 total plays.

Glenville State had 10 first downs on the day while Fairmont State tallied 24 first downs. On the ground the Pioneers rushed for 95 yards and had 103 passing yards while the Fighting Falcons ran for 271 yards and threw for 302 passing yards. FSU averaged 7.96 yards per play while GSC averaged 4.50 yards.

Glenville State committed three turnovers on the day as they lost two fumbles and threw an interception while Fairmont State didn't commit a turnover.

The Pioneers were only penalized two times for 20 yards while FSU was flagged seven times for 65 yards.

Quarterback Jaylen McNair went 10-for-22 for 103 yards with and touchdown and an interception. Javon Butler was McNair's favorite target as he hauled in four passes for 53 yards. Gary Bacon caught just one pass, a 37-yard touchdown.

J'Quan Anderson totted the ball 18 times for 91 yards.

Defensively for the Pioneers, Samuel Thomas led all tacklers on the afternoon with 13 total. Dominic Cizauskas finished with 12 tackles while Wil Mayes finished with 11 on the day.

Takwan Crew-Naylor went 17-of-21 for 301 yards and threw four touchdowns for FSU. Khalik Hamlin led the rushing attack as he carried the ball 21 times for 119 yards.

Urbana (4-4, 3-4) comes into the game after falling to the Shepherd University Rams, 44-21.

Urbana went ahead early, but Shepherd scored 37 unanswered points on its way to the win.

Urbana's Hale completed 6-of-13 passes for 98 yards. Isaiah Young added 61 yards and a touchdown for the Blue Knights. DeArmon Lewis led the defensive effort with nine tackles and had an interception.

This is the sixth matchup between the two schools and GSC holds a 4-1 advantage in the series since 2013. Glenville State's only loss to Urbana came in the first year of the MEC. The Pioneers defeated the Blue Knights last season 34-14.
