Pioneers Earn Road Victory over Concord

Athens, W.Va. – After trailing 15-0 the Glenville State Pioneer football team rallied off 41 straight points as they held on to defeat the Concord University Mountain Lions, 41-35.

Glenville State (2-4, 2-3 MEC) racked up 530 total yards on 66 plays while Concord (1-5, 1-5 MEC) ran 57 plays for 265 total yards.

Concord struck pay dirt first at the 13:14 minute mark as Tywan Pearce scored on an 11 yard run. The two-point conversion was good as they led, 8-0. Then a Pioneer fumble by Jaylen McNair gave the ball back to the Mountain Lions. Concord then scored on just one play as Kris Copeland scored from 15 yards out as CU held a 15-0 lead with 11:19 to play in quarter number one.

After Concords last score, the Pioneers would rally off 27 straight points. The first score came from Mario Pender as he scored a fabulous 61 yard touchdown run as they pulled with eight, 15-7 with 7:06 to play in the first.

GSC then added a 28 yard field goal from Justin Watts as the Pioneers pulled within five, 15-10. The Pioneer defense then came away with a big turnover as Daniel Robinson had an interception as the first quarter ended.

In the second quarter, the GSC interception led to another score as J'Quan Anderson scored on an 18 yard touchdown run as the Pioneers took their first lead of the game at 17-15 with 11:32 in the second quarter.

Glenville State then added a 28 yard field goal and a two-yard touchdown pass from McNair to Anderson as the Pioneers came back from down 15 points as they led, 27-15 at halftime.

In the third, the Pioneers added to their lead when Mario Pender scored on a one yard run as GSC took a 34-15 lead at the 8:13 minute mark. Glenville State then went up by 26 points at the 4:25 minute mark of the third as J'Quan Anderson caught a 10 yard touchdown pass from Jaylen McNair as the Pioneers led, 41-15.

In the fourth quarter, Concord added three late scores but the Pioneers held on as they earned their second victory of the season, 41-35.

Glenville State passed for 269 yards while rushing for 261 yards while the Pioneer defense held Concord to just 71 passing yards.

GSC was 6-of-6 in the red zone while Concord went 3-of-5.

Mario Pender ran for 212 yards on the ground on 21 carriers with two touchdowns. J'Quan Anderson rushed for 83 yards on 14 carriers with a touchdown.

Jaylen McNair went 17-of-26 for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Trey Shuff hauled in four passes for 57 yards while Gary Bacon caught four passes for 42 yards. J'Quan Anderson caught three passes for 19 yards and two touchdowns.

For the Pioneer defense, Dominic Cizauskas finished with nine tackles while Daniel Robinson finished with five tackles and an interception.

Isaiah Bowman rushed for 101 yards on 13 carriers and two touchdowns for Concord.

Adam Fulton went 5-of-15 for just 71 yards and three interceptions.

Jonathan Roebuck led the Concord defense with nine total tackles while Ke'Shaen Hall finished with six tackles.

Glenville State (2-4, 2-3 MEC) will return to action next Saturday, October 13th when they host the West Liberty Hilltoppers at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
