Pioneers Fall on Senior Day to the UC Golden Eagles

Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer football team fell to the University of Charleston Golden Eagles, 28-6 on Senior Day, in the final game of the 2018 season.

Glenville State (5-6, 5-5) gained 243 yard of total offense on 50 plays while the University of Charleston (6-5, 6-4) ran 69 plays totaling 312 yards of offense.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start as neither team found the end zone in the first quarter. UC had an opportunity at a 44 yard field goal but the kick would go wide right as we headed into the second quarter scoreless.  

UC got on the board at the 14:56 mark of the second quarter on a 27 yard field goal from Kevin Weiman as they went up 3-0. Then later in the quarter with just 1:40 left the Golden Eagles scored on a six yard pass from Mason Olszewski to Mike Strachan as UC headed into halftime up, 10-0.

The third quarter opens with UC fumble that GSC's Dominic Cizauskas forced and D'Andre Brown recovered. Then just one play after that Jaylen McNair hit Javon Butler for an 84 yard touchdown with 11:22 to play. However the PAT snap was fumbled as the Golden Eagles returned it for two-points making it, 12-6

UC's offense then quickly answered as Olszewski scored on a one yard rush putting the Golden Eagles up by 13 points, 19-6 with 7:30 to play in the third.

The Golden Eagles defense then came up with a big stop and added more points. UC's defense recorded a team safety as Jaylen McNair was called for intentional grounding in the endzone making it, 21-6 as we headed into the final quarter of action.

The Golden Eagles added the last score of the game at the 4:40 minute mark in the fourth as Jimmy Wheeler scored on a five yard rush making it 28-6 as UC spoiled Senior Day for the Pioneers.

The Pioneer offense could not find their groove. On the day they rushed for 69 yards and had 174 yards in the air. The Golden Eagles rushed for 103 yards and had 209 passing yards. UC tallied 18 first downs while GSC had just eight.

Glenville State went just 2-for-13 on third downs while Charleston went 9-for-16.

Mario Pender carried the ball 11 times for 29 yards while Justin Watts rushed for 29 yards on a fake punt.

Jaylen McNair threw for 144 yards going 8-for-22 and a touchdown. Javon Butler caught four passes for 99 yards and the lone touchdown for GSC.

Dominic Cizauskas lead the team in tackles with 19 as he finished with 134 total on the season coming up just two shy of breaking the single season tackles record at GSC which is held by the Pioneers defensive coordinator, Blake Tasker with 136.

Quintavius Twine chipped in with 10 tackles on the day.

Quarterback Mason Olszewski rushed for 49 yards on 12 carriers and touchdown run for UC. Olszewski went 19-for-24 for 203 yards and a touchdown.

D'Andre Brooks caught eight passes for 51 yards.

Kenny Randall led the Golden Eagles defense with 10 tackles in the contest.

The Pioneers finish the season at 5-6 (5-5 MEC).
