Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer men's basketball team spoiled Senior Day for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats as they picked up the 71-67 road win.
Glenville State (8-20, 6-16) erased a 16 point second half deficit and had three players score in double figures while West Virginia Wesleyan (7-21, 7-15) had just two players in double figures.
Glenville State fell behind early as WV Wesleyan took a 5-0 lead. But the Pioneers would go on a 9-5 run as they pulled within one, 10-9. The Bobcats held a 14-9 lead at the first media timeout. After the media timeout WVWC went on a small 6-0 run as they took a 16-9 lead over GSC.
Glenville State later fell behind by 10 at 24-14 under the 10 minute mark. However the Pioneers responded as they went on a 6-2 run as they pulled within six, 26-20. The Bobcats then outscored the Pioneers 9-8 to end the half as GSC trailed eight, 36-28.
In the first half the Pioneers shot 37 percent from the field and shot 50 percent from deep but GSC went just 3-of-11 from the charity strip. WV Wesleyan shot 48 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep.
In the second half the Pioneers would go on an 8-0 run as they tied the game up at 36 all at the 17:33 minute mark. However the Bobcats answered right back as they then scored the next 10 points as they went back up by 10, 46-36 with under 15 minutes to play.
West Virginia Wesleyan would continue to hold a double digit lead but two back-to-back steals and layups for the Pioneers would cut it back to eight points 61-53 with less than six minutes to play. Â Â
Darhius Nunn then hit a huge three-pointer to cut the lead to five, 61-56 with under five minutes to play. GSC continued to chip away as they trailed by just three, 63-60 as the last media timeout of the game was called.
Both teams then traded back-to-back three-pointers as GSC trailed by two points, 66-64 with 1:23 to play. Glenville State's
Brooks Ely then hit back-to-back three-pointers and the Pioneers would hit their free-throws down the line as they picked up the road win over the Bobcats, 71-67.
The Pioneers finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field and 60 percent from deep while the Bobcats shot 47 percent from the floor and 31 percent from deep.
Darhius Nunn scored a game-high 22 points and dished out six assists.
Brooks Ely and
Elisha Mayberry both scored 18 points in the win.
West Virginia Wesleyan was led by Fred Brondsted as he scored 16 points while Dusan Vicentic chipped in with 15 points.
Glenville State (8-20, 6-16) will now take on the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise in the first round of the MEC Tournament on Wednesday, February 28
th at 6:00 p.m. from the Charleston Civic Center.
