No. 5/7 Lady Pioneers Down Bobcats of WVWC, Finishes Conference Play Unbeaten

Glenville, W.Va. – The No. 5/7 Glenville State Lady Pioneer women's basketball team defeated the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on the road Saturday, 91-65. With the win GSC becomes the first team in MEC history to go undefeated in conference play on the men's or women's side.

Glenville State (27-1, 22-0) drilled 19 three-pointers as they shot 33 percent from deep and 36 percent from the field while West Virginia Wesleyan (8-20, 6-16) made just four three's as they shot 23 percent from deep and 38 percent from the field.

The Bobcats came out and took an early 4-0 lead however Julie Bishop would answer with a three-pointer of her own as GSC trailed, 4-3. West Virginia Wesleyan then scored the next four points as they held a five point lead at 8-3 with 6:45 on the clock.

Again Julie Bishop would drill a three-pointer, her second of the contest, as she pulled the Lady Pioneers within two, 8-6. The Bobcats ended up taking a four point lead after one quarter, 16-12. GSC finished the first quarter 4-of-21 from the floor with all four made shots being three-pointers.

Glenville State started the second quarter with another three-pointer, this time from Abby Stoller, as they pulled within one point, 16-15. The Lady Pioneers then knotted the game up at 21 all with 4:30 to play. GSC then took their first lead at the 4:25 minute mark at 23-21, but WVWC would outscore the Lady Pioneers 14-5 in the rest of the quarter as Glenville State trailed at halftime, 34-30.

In the third GSC would make separation as they stared the second half on a 19-7 run as they took a 49-41 lead. The Lady Pioneers would continue to pour it on as they went on to outscore WVWC 33-11 in the quarter as they led by 18, 63-45 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth it was all GSC as they outscored WVWC 28-20 to claim their 26th straight win.

"I love this group of young ladies, not a lot of coaches can say that about their team and I mean it. I am so proud of them for making history today, however with that being said we still have work to do," stated GSC Head Coach Kim Stephens.

Glenville State's defense forced 20 turnovers and scored 16 points off of them. However WVWC won the rebounding battle as they out rebounded GSC by four, 53-49.

Julie Bishop led the Lady Pioneers as she scored a game-high 17 points drilling five three-pointers. Paris McLeod scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Odyssey Trussell and Bhrea Griffin both registered 12 points. Asiya Smith chipped in with 10 points.

West Virginia Wesleyan was led by Stacy Remer as she scored a team high 15 points while Mari Stewart scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Glenville State (27-1, 22-0) will now await the winner of #8 Shepherd/#9 Concord in the MEC Quarterfinals at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1st at the Charleston Civic Center.
