Glenville, W.Va. - The GSC Pioneer Football team opens up the 2018 season on the road this Thursday, August 30 at 7 p.m. under the lights at UVa-Wise. It is the only Thursday night game of the year for GSC this season.
This is the second time since joining the MEC and the second year in a row that the Pioneers open up the season against the Cavaliers and on Thursday night. In last year's matchup GSC would squander away an early nine-point lead as they fell to the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise at Morris Stadium, 41-29.
Glenville State had 421 total yards of offense with 311 in the air and 110 on the ground in that game.
Javon Butler led the receiving corps with three receptions for 128 yards and three TD's. Butler will look to have another standout season in 2018. On the ground,
Dominique Gibson led GSC with 15 carries for 68 yards. With Gibson gone most of the running duties will fall on senior running back
Thomas Boles III. Boles, rushed for 38 yards on 10 carries against the Cavaliers in week one.
The Pioneers will also rely heavily on sophomore QB Jaylan McNair. The 5-11, 185-pound QB, a native of McGaheysville, Virginia, threw for 1,857 yards as a true freshman in 2017 to go along with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
For the GSC defense,
Andre Dalton and
Quintavius Twine each contributed nine tackles. Twine will look to be a force in 2018 for GSC. The senior defensive back tallied 68 total tackles last year which was third best on the Pioneer squad. Several other key returns will look to make an impact in week one in senior defensive tackle
Austin Hill and junior linebacker
Wil Mayes.
For the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise they racked up 485 total yards, on 87 plays against GSC in week one in 2017. Quarterback Brycen Lee was 27-of-45 through the air for 318 yards and three touchdown passes. Running back Carlton Griffith carried the ball 15 times for 39 yards and rushed for two touchdowns. Backup quarterback Jarome Johnson led the Cavaliers rushing attack with four carries for 92 yards. Both Lee and Johnson are back in 2018 for the Cavaliers
Kaian Duverger led the UVa-Wise receivers as he caught eight passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Ed Kargbo and Dylan Giovine led UVa-Wise with 9 total tackles a-piece.
GSC holds a 3-2 record against UVa-Wise. Last season UVa-Wise defeated the Pioneers at home, 41-29.
