Pioneers Host Battlers in “I-79 Barrel Classic” Saturday

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State (1-2, 1-2) will return home to Morris Stadium in week four this Saturday, September 22nd as they step away from conference play for a matchup with the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers in the I-79 Barrel Classic. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m.

Last week the Pioneers fell on the road to the Rams of Shepherd University, 41-24.

GSC finished with 319 total yards of offense on 57 plays while Shepherd (1-1, 1-1) had 498 total yards of offense on 74 plays. Glenville State finished with 16 first downs while Shepherd racked up 32 first downs. GSC struggled on the ground as they rushed for just 20 yards while the Rams tallied 120 rushing yards.

Neither team was penalized that much in the contest as GSC was flagged four times for 47 yards and SU tallied just two penalties for 15 yards.

Jaylen McNair threw for 269 yards with two touchdowns as he went 24-of-32 with an interception. McNair's favorite target of the day was Tre Crutcher as he hauled in six catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. Javon Butler had another stellar game as he caught four passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Mario Pender totted the ball 12 times for the Pioneers as he rushed for 49 yards while hauling in six passes for 32 yards.

Defensively for GSC, Daniel Robinson tallied nine tackles and had two pass break-ups while Quintavius Twine finished with eight tackles. Dominic Cizauska also finished with eight tackles to go with a tackle for loss and a sack. And Samuel Thomas finished with four tackles and also had an interception returned for a touchdown.

The Alderson Broaddus University football team fell 29-24 to visiting Tiffin last Saturday afternoon in their Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener.

The Battlers had 329 total yards of offense on 70 plays, with 120 rushing yards and 209 through the air. Alderson Broaddus turned the ball over four times with four interceptions in the game.

AB's Joe Czelusniak finished the game with 209 yards passing and a pair of scores. Jalen Jackson led the rushing attack with 68 yards. Nicholas Bishop added 34 yards and a touchdown.

Otis Smith led the Battlers with nine tackles and a forced fumble. Matt Jackson, Quade Raley and William Bailey all picked up eight stops. Freshman Brandon Harrell intercepted a pair of passes. Ryan Smith also hauled in a pick.

Again, the rivalry between GSC and AB – known as the 'I-79 Barrel Classic' – is just the fourth meeting between the two schools which are separated by only 70 miles. The first meeting between the two came back in 2015 and the Pioneers hold a 2-1 series record. Last season, GSC defeated AB 47-42. However, neither team has won on their home field in the series. Kick-off is slated for 12 p.m.
