Football Home Opener Set for Saturday Against Notre Dame

Glenville, W.Va. - In week two of the 2018 season the Pioneers will host the Notre Dame College Falcons in the home opener this Saturday, September 8th at Morris Stadium with kick-off slated for 12 p.m.

GSC (1-0, 1-0) comes into the game after defeating the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise (0-1, 0-1) last Thursday evening, 17-7. The young Pioneers had all aspects of the game going as they scored an offensive touchdown, a defensive touchdown, and a special team's field goal.

Glenville State rushed for 161 yards on the ground while the Pioneer defense forced UVa-Wise into three turnovers earning the 10 point road victory.

​​​​​​​Glenville State tallied 222 total yards on 70 plays while UVa-Wise racked up 306 yards on 73 plays. The Pioneers held the big advantage on the ground rushing for 161 yards on 50 carriers.

Defensively, Dominic Cizauskas made his presence felt in his Pioneer debut by recording 19 total tackles as well as a sack and forcing a fumble late in the contest. D'Andre Brown was also able to scoop and score on a fumble from 14-yards out.

Offensively, Mario Pender had a bright Pioneer debut while carrying the ball 25 times for 124 yards.

​​​​​​​Jaylen McNair would account for GSC's only offensive touchdown on a 27-yard TD pass to Tre Crutcher, his first career TD catch as a Pioneer. McNair finished the night 8-for-20 for 61 yards, with a touchdown, and one interception. The interception was the Pioneers lone turnover.

A key for the Pioneers victory was winning the turnover battle. GSC forced three turnovers, while only committing one. GSC was penalized seven times for 65 yards, as the Cavaliers racked up 11 penalties for 114 yards.

Notre Dame College (1-0, 1-0) comes into the game after holding to defeat No. 16 Shepherd University Rams at home on Saturday. The win by the Falcons snapped the Rams 30-game conference win streak.

NDC's Jaleel McLaughlin's had 302 yards rushing on 22 carries to lead Notre Dame. The 302 yards were the third-most in conference history. McLaughlin scored on runs of 76 and 75 yards in the game. Marvelle Ross had a pair of touchdown receptions and Chris Brimm had 110 yards passing.

Defensively, Guam Lee had two interceptions for Notre Dame and returned one of those 99 yards but was stopped just shy of the end zone.

The Pioneers hold the series advantage over the Falcons, 3-2. However, Notre Dame defeated GSC last season 35-10.
