Lady Pioneers Earn Huge Road Victory over Concord University

Athens, W.Va. – The GSC Lady Pioneers now sit alone atop of the MEC Women's Basketball standings after going on the road Wednesday night and earned a huge win over the Mountain Lions of Concord University, 117-107.

Glenville State (17-2, 12-1) drilled 17 three-pointers on the way to the 10 point victory. Concord (15-4, 11-2) shot great from the floor as they finished 61 percent from the field but had 17 costly turnovers.

Early in the first quarter, GSC held a one point lead over the Mountain Lions at 9-8. However, Concord went on a 7-0 run as they built a six point lead, 15-9. Glenville State would pull within one at the first media timeout with 4:41 on the clock, 15-14.

The Mountain Lions came out of the media timeout firing on all cylinders as they went on a 10-2 run and took a 25-16 lead. Glenville State ended the first quarter on an 11-0 as they regained the lead and headed into the second quarter up, 27-25.

GSC started the second quarter right where they left off as they quickly went on an 11-0 run holding a 13 point lead, 44-31. Glenville State eventually stretched their lead to 14 points, their largest of the first half, at 52-38 with 3:03 until halftime. Concord made a small run to end the half as they were able to pull within single digits, 58-49.

The Lady Pioneers used 10 first half three-pointers to help build their lead while only turning the ball over three times.

In the third, Concord went on an early 8-0 run pulling within four points, 62-58. Later in the quarter Madison May connected on an old fashion three-point play as the Mountain Lions took a one point lead at 68-67. Madison May went on to connect on two more three-point plays in the quarter but CU trailed 85-79.

Donasja Scott came up with a big bucket for the Lady Pioneers as the clock expired to put GSC up by eight as we headed into the fourth, 87-79.

Concord started the fourth quarter outscoring Glenville State 11-4 as the Lady Pioneers held just a one point lead, 91-90, with 6:08 to play. Emily Stoller then provided a quick lift for GSC as they jumped back out to an eight point lead, 98-90, forcing Concord to call a timeout with 5:03 left to play.

Glenville State then went on an 11-6 run and went up by 13, 109-96. The Mountain Lions would make a late push but the deep shooting of the Lady Pioneers proved to be too much as GSC earned the 10 point win, 117-107.

The contest saw eight lead changes and had five ties. The largest lead of the game by the Lady Pioneers came in the fourth quarter at 15 points while the Mountain Lions was nine points which came in the first quarter.

Glenville State finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field and 36 percent from deep. The Lady Pioneers only turned the ball over five times while they scored 39 points off of 17 Mountain Lions turnovers.

Donasja Scott led the Lady Pioneers with 23 points while Emily Stoller finished with 22 points and five rebounds. Ty Armstrong and Courtney Davis each added 14 points while Blaize Burgess chipped in with 11 points. Re'Shawna Stone finished the night with 10 points.

Concord was led by Madison May as she poured in a game-high 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Riley Fitzwater posted a double-double as she scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Glenville State (17-2, 12-1) will host the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise this Saturday, February 2nd from inside the Waco Center at 2 p.m.
