Glenville, W.Va. - The Glenville State Pioneers defense forced seven turnovers as it lifted them to a 22-15 victory over the Fairmont State University Fighting Falcons on Thursday evening in the annual "Battle for the Bit", 22-15. The victory over Fairmont State was the first for the Pioneers since 2013.
This Saturday, October 12
th the Pioneers travel to Urbana University.
Glenville State (3-2, 2-2 MEC) finished with 260 total yards of offense while Fairmont State (1-4-, 1-4 MEC) racked up 511 total yards of offense on 78 plays.
It's the second straight game the Pioneers have failed to score an offensive touchdown.
GSC rushed for 74 yards on 37 carries while FSU racked up 159 yards on the ground on 38 carriers.
Fairmont State also held the advantage in the air as they threw for 352 yards while GSC finished with 186 yards in the air.
Glenville State was only penalized four times in the contest for 30 yards while Fairmont State was flagged nine times for 88 yards.
Mario Pender rushed for 56 yards on 19 carries to lead GSC.
Timothy Heltzel finished the night going 13-for-25 for 186 yards and an interception.
Heltzel's favorite target was
Austin Ratliff as he hauled in four passes for 43 yards.
Isaac Myers finished with two catches for 52 yards.
Defensively,
Dominic Cizauskas had a fabulous game finishing with 11 tackles, two interceptions, two touchdowns, a fumble recovery, and a sack.
Wil Mayes racked up 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
Delonte Hood also came away with two interceptions on the night.
Urbana (3-2, 3-2 MEC) comes into the game after falling to Frostburg State, 24-16. It's the second-straight loss for the blue Knights after they opened up the 2019 season 3-0.
Urbana totaled 231 yards of total offense but only accounted for 41 rushing yards in the contest.
Blue Knight's quarterback Eddie Stockett went 17-for-21 for 190 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. Jesse Bray caught five passes for 49 yards and a TD. Urbana's defense was led by LA Kelly as racked up a game-high 14 tackles.
GSC is 5-1 against UU since 2013. The Pioneers only loss to Urbana came in the inaugural year of the MEC (2013) 12-9. Last season GSC defeated Urbana 28-21. The Pioneers have also averaged 32.5 points against the Blue Knights. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
