GSC Football Looks to Get Back on Track Saturday at Home

Glenville, W.Va. – Last Saturday the Glenville State Pioneers scored the first points of the ball game however that was the only points GSC scored as they fell on the road to the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston, 42-3.

Glenville State (4-4, 3-4 MEC) tallied 201 yards on 80 plays while the University of Charleston (5-3, 4-3 MEC) totaled 447 yards on 71 total plays.

This week GSC returns home to Morris Stadium as they host Wheeling University at 12 p.m.

Glenville State finished the day with just nine first downs while UC tallied 18. UC rushed for 79 total yards while GSC finished with 60 rushing yards.

The Pioneers were just 3-for-22 on third downs while the Golden Eagles were 6-of-15.

Timothy Heltzel went 18-for-42 for 141 yards and had threw two interceptions. Javon Butler hauled in five passes for 60 yards while Isaac Myers caught four balls for 45 yards.

Heltzel also led the rushing attack for the Pioneers as he rushed for 37 yards on 17 carriers while Mario Pender carried the ball nine times for 26 yards.

Dominic Cizauska led the GSC defense with eight total tackles while Samuel Thomas also recorded eight tackles while Wil Mayes also finished with eight in the game. GSC's defense ranks first in the country in interceptions with 16 on the season.

UC's Brant Grisel went 23-for-38 for 368 yards four touchdowns and an interception. 

Mike Strachan caught nine passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns.

Wheeling (0-8, 0-7 MEC) is still looking for its first win of the 2019 season. They come into Saturday's matchup after falling to Frostburg State, 42-12.

Frostburg State tallied 370 offensive yards in the win and Wheeling notched 309 on the day.

Sy Alli IV tallied 16 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown for Wheeling. Cam'ron McClain chipped in 55 yards on the ground with one score.  Tucker Strachan threw for 156 yards on 16-of-40 passing.  Ryan LaFollette had a team-high eight receptions for 83 yards.

Brandon Munoz paced Wheeling with 10 stops (three solo, seven assisted) on the day.  Jayvon Johnson and Ryan Gorman each chipped in nine tackles for the Cardinals.

This is the first ever matchup on the gridiron between the Pioneers and Cardinals, as this is the first season of DII Football for Wheeling University. Kick-off is slated for 12 p.m.
