Pioneers Prevail on Senior Day

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer Football team finished the season undefeated at home as they conquered the Bobcats of Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon, 10-7.

Glenville State (7-4, 6-4 MEC) gained 277 total yards of offense on 59 plays while Frostburg State (8-3, 7-3 MEC) ran 58 plays and totaled 200 yards of offense.

It was a defensive battle in the first half of the contest between the Pioneers and the Bobcats.

Frostburg started the game with the ball and drove down to the Pioneers 23 yard line. However, GSC defense held strong as Dane Lynch picked-off Will Brunson as Glenville State's offense took over at the 11:22 mark quarter number one.

GSC's offense sputtered as they punted the ball back to the Bobcats.

After another defensive stand by GSC, the Pioneer offense took over at the 7:25 minute mark after a 39 yard punt by Frostburg. However, Glenville State gave it right back as Javon Butler would throw an interception on a trick play as the Bobcats took over at the Pioneer 40 yard line with 7:17 to play until the second quarter.

Again, the Blue and White defense would stand strong as they forced another punt.

Glenville State's offense then gave it right back to the Frostburg State as Jaylen McNair would get stripped on a run as the Bobcats took over at the GSC 20 yard line with just 45 second to play in the quarter.

The Bobcats would attempt a 46 yard field goal but it would end up going wide right as we entered the second quarter scoreless.

In the second, Frostburg would drive down to the Pioneers 22 yard line. Again the Pioneers defense would force a 39 yard field goal and again the Bobcats came up short as we stayed scoreless with 10:30 to play till the break.

Jump to late in the second and the Pioneers would put the first points on the board with just three seconds left until the half as Justin Watts connected on a 35 yard field goal, his 21st of the year,  as GSC took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

In the third, the Bobcats would take their first lead of the game at 7-3. Frostburg drove 79 yards on 11 plays as they found pay dirt on a trick play when George Richardson hit Ben Saxton for a five yard touchdown catch with 7:55 to play in the third.

Glenville State then regained the lead at the 1:37 minute mark of the third as Austin Ratliff hauled in a 10 yard touchdown pass from Jaylen McNair as the Pioneers held a 10-7 lead. The Pioneers took that lead into the fourth.

In the fourth, neither team would score as they Pioneers held on and claimed their seventh win of the season defeating Frostburg State, 10-7.  

Glenville State rushed for 94 yards on the ground while Frostburg State had just 44 rushing yards.

The Pioneers went 0-for-12 on third downs while the Bobcats went 5-for-15. Frostburg was just 1-for-2 in the red-zone while GSC was 2-for-2 on the day.

Seth Arnold led the ground attack for the Pioneers, rushing for 52 yards on 22 carriers.

Jaylen McNair went 16-for-26 for 183 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 25 yards in the contest.

McNair's favorite target was Austin Ratliff as he caught eight passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Javon Butler also caught three passes for 82 yards.

Defensively, Dominic Cizauskas had a fabulous game as he finished with a game-high 12 tackles, with three tackles for loss, and two sacks. Samuel Thomas chipped in with eight tackles.

D'Andre Brown totaled seven tackles and a sack in the win.

Frostburg State was led by Gavin Lavat as he rushed for 70 yards on 26 rushes.

Will Brunson went 13-for-22 for 151 yards and an interception.

For the Bobcats defense, Zach Stand finished with 10 tackles, with 3.5 tackles for loss, and a sack.
