Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State suffered an 83-72 non-conference loss against the Vulcans of California University of Pennsylvania in a late rally. The Pioneers fall to 4-2 on the year.
Phil Bledsoe earned his third double-double of the season and 20
th career with 24 total points and 12 rebounds.
Steven Verplancken and
Tyvon Taylor put the Pioneers (4-2) on the board early before the Vulcans gained an early 13-6 lead.
Cal Pa (5-2) continued to push their lead to a ten-point advantage at 23-13 and made separation by going on a 13-6 run to lead 34-19 with 7:43 left in the first.
A lay-up by
Ty Robinson would end the Cal Pa run as
Phil Bledsoe's three and a pair of lay-ups by Robinson and Verplacnken put the Pioneers back in sight of the Vulcans at 36-28.
The Pioneers would add another seven buckets to the board to go into the half trailing 41-33.
Glenville State shot just 38% from the floor while California University of PA shot 51%. Both the Vulcans and the Pioneers were tied at 20 rebounds a piece.
The Vulcans and the Pioneers traded baskets at 14 a piece going into the second with six buckets by Bledsoe.
Taylor and
Hegel Augustin connected on a pair of baskets from deep to reduce their deficit back down to single digits by going on an 11-5 run trailing 71-62 with under five minutes remaining.
Fast forward to under two minutes remaining as both teams would trade baskets back and forth. A jumper by Bledsoe and layup by
Rodney Ray would put the Pioneers within seven.
Cal Pa would be fouled twice to add four shots from the strip as they held on to the 83-72 victory over GSC.
The Pioneers shot 40% from the field going just 9-for-38 from behind the arc with 41 total rebounds.
GSC bench scored 20 points but had just six fast break points and 36 points from the paint.
The Vulcans shot 47% from the floor with only three shots from deep going 14-for-17 from the stripe.
Cal Pa out rebounded the Pioneers by four, 45-41, with 16 fast break points and 58 points in the paint.
Tyvon Taylor,
Ty Robinson and
Noah Frampton each had eight total points. Taylor lead the Blue and White with two steals as Frampton and
Hegel Augustin both had three assists.
California (Pa) was lead by Zyan Collins and Philip Alexander with 23 and 19 points, respectively.
The Pioneers will be back in action traveling to South Euclid, Ohio to square off against Notre Dame College on December 4
th at 7:30pm.
