NCAA Atlantic Region First Round Recap

Box Score Indiana (PA) 67, Bowie State 60 | Final Stats
GLENVILLE, W.Va.
– Indiana University of Pennsylvania produced a 9-1 run to close the game Friday afternoon, pulling out a 67-60 victory in the opening round of the Division II Atlantic Regional Women's Basketball Tournament.

Coach Tom McConnell's squad (27-3) was behind 59-58 with less than three minutes remaining, but delivered on both sides of the court in the game's final moments. Senior guard Carolyn Appleby led the Crimson Hawks with 19 points, including a critical long range fourth quarter three-pointer. IUP's balanced attack included 13 points from both Lauren Wolosik and Brittany Robinson, and 11 each from Lexi Griggs and Natalie Myers.

Robinson produced a double-double leading all rebounders with 12, and also recorded a game-high five blocked shots. Wolosik posted a game-high five assists. IUP shot a solid 51.1% from the field (23-of-45) including 43.5% from three-point range (10-of-23).

Bowie State (22-6) battled throughout in a game that featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Pere Alexander with 17 points, and Talanya Hutton with 14. BSU won the team rebounding battle 33-30.

Virginia Union 83, Edinboro 71 | Final Stats
GLENVILLE, W.Va.
- Second-seeded Seed Virginia Union advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round, defeating a game Edinboro squad 83-71 at Glenville's Waco Center.

Rejoice Spivey led the Panthers (28-2) with 27 points, followed by Shareka McNeil with 17.

Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's squad connected on 43.5% of their three-pointers (10-of-23) and helped seal the game by hitting 25 of their 33 free throw attempts (75.8%). Jasmine Carter posted a game high eight rebounds.

Edinboro closes their successful season with a 20-9 mark in Coach Callie Wheeler's first season as head coach. Four different Fighting Scots hit double figures; Bridgette Shaffer with 16 points, Michelle Jahn 15, and Michaela Barnes and Clara Rosten with 14 apiece. Barnes posted a game-high six assists.

Edinboro led after one quarter 17-15, but Virginia Union materialized a strong second quarter to register a 39-29 halftime lead. The Panthers punctuated their victory on the defensive end, holding Edinboro to only nine points in the fourth quarter.

Virginia Union advances to the Regional Semifinal, facing #3 sees IUP on Saturday night at 5:00 p.m.

Glenville 116, West Liberty 92 | Final Stats
GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Top seed Glenville State produced a strong all-around effort in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament Friday night, defeating MEC rival West Liberty 116-82.

Coach Kim Stephens' Lady Pioneers (30-2) shot 52.9% from the field (45-of-85) and only committed seven turnovers in the victory. Glenville's balanced attack included six different players reaching double figures; Emily Stoller with 21 points, Ty Armstrong 18, Re'Shawna Stone 17, Zakiyah Winfield, Donasja Scott, and Courtney Davis each with 14. Davis led the rebounding effort with seven, while Stone posted a team-high seven assists.

Glenville scored over 100 points for the 18 th time this season.

Coach Kyle Cooper's West Liberty squad closes their season at 21-10. Marissa Brown, the MEC scoring champion closed her career with a 25-point, nine-rebound effort. She eclipsed the 1800 mark in career points during the contest. Four other Hilltoppers scored in double figures, led by Morgan Brunner with 19, OIivia Belknap 17, Brandi Beader 11, and Taylor Johnson 10. Audrey Tingle delivered a game-high eight assists.

The host Glenville State squad advances to Saturday night's Regional Semifinal at 7:30.

California (PA) 82, Charleston 71 | Final Stats
GLENVILLE, W.Va.
– California University of Pennsylvania held off a furious late rally from the University of Charleston Friday night, holding on for an 82-71 victory in First Round action of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.

Coach Jess Strom's Vulcans raced to a 30-9 lead after the first quarter, and the lead ballooned to a 28- point advantage in the second quarter when the score stood at 47-19. The stellar defensive effort produced a 51-26 CU lead at the half.

Charleston (25-7) chipped away at the lead throughout the second half, and narrowed the advantage to six points at 69-63 halfway through the fourth quarter. But California responded with a strong stretch run and closed the victory.

California (25-5) recorded a 41-21 team rebound advantage, 16 of which came on the offensive end. Second chance points were key to the strong first half Vulcan surge. Bianca Jasper led the team with 20 points, and was complemented by 18 from Abbey Sporio and 17 from Seairra Barrett. Barrett led all rebounders with seven, with Jasper posting a game-high six assists.

Raziyah Farrington led Charleston with 20 points. She was joined in double figures by Anna Hayton with 15, Brooklyn Pannell 12, and Dionna Sanders 10. Gracie Roberts led the Golden Eagles in assists with six.

California advances to Saturday night's semifinal tilt with host and top seed Glenville.
