Lady Pioneers Fall in Atlantic Region Semis to Vulcans of Cal Pa

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers historic season has come to an end on Saturday night at the Waco Center as they fell in a hard fought contest to California University of Pennsylvania 87-77 in the NCAA DII Atlantic Region Tournament Semifinals.

Glenville State (30-3) shot 38 percent from the field and had four players score double figures while California Pa (26-5) finished the contest shooting 40 percent from the floor and saw five players' post double figures.

Late in the fourth, GSC's Emily Stoller tied the contest up at 72 all with 31 seconds left in regulation as the Lady Pioneers and Vulcans headed to overtime.

After a 74-74 tie in OT, the Vulcans went on a 6-0 run as they took an 80-74 lead with 2:14 to play. Emily Stoller would connect on another three-pointer for GSC as they cut the lead to three points, 80-77 with 1:29 left in the contest. However, California Pa would outscore Glenville State 15-5 in the overtime period as the Lady Pioneers fell, 87-77.

Glenville got off to a slow start in the contest as they trailed after one quarter of action 23-18. The Vulcans also outscored the Lady Pioneers in the second 17-15 as GSC trailed at halftime, 40-33.

California Pa would stretch their lead to nine points several times in the third with eventually taking an eight point lead heading into the fourth, 57-49.

Glenville State started the fourth on an 8-2 run as they pulled within two, 59-57 with 7:03 to play. The Lady Pioneers then knotted it up with 3:59 on the clock at 64 all. GSC then took their first lead of the second half at the 3:18 minute mark at 66-64 as Zakiyah Winfield scored two of her 13 points.

However the night did not belong to the Lady Pioneers as they eventually fell in overtime.

The contest had six ties and five lead changes.

Cal Pa shot 46 free-throws and scored 34 points from the line while GSC was perfect from the charity stripe going just 5-for-5.

Glenville State went 12-of-40 from deep for 30 percent while California Pa went just 1-of-9 from three-point range as they finished shooting 11 percent from deep.

The Lady Pioneers scored 12 second chance points while the Vulcans had 10. GSC turned the ball over 21 times with California Pa scoring 24 points off of them.

Emily Stoller paced the Lady Pioneers with 17 points with 11 of them coming in the fourth quarter. Zakiyah Winfield finished with 13 points to along go with four rebounds and four assists. Ty Armstrong also finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Courtney Davis chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds while the MEC Freshman of the Year and MEC Tournament MVP Re'Shawna Stone finished with nine points before fouling out. GSC had a total of three players foul out of the contest.

Abbey Sporio led the Vulcans with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds while Bianca Jasper chipped in with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Glenville State (30-3) had an outstanding season and posted back-to-back 30 wins seasons for just the second time in school history.
