Wheeling, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers shattered six MEC Tournament records as they defeated the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State on Thursday night at the WesBanco Arena, 105-86, advancing to the MEC Semifinals on Saturday.
Glenville State (27-2) scored 32 second chance points and grabbed 36 offensive rebounds on the way to the victory. West Virginia State (8-21) scored just seven second chance points and shot just 28 percent from behind the arc.
Courtney Davis got GSC on the scoreboard first as she netted two free-throws at the 8:30 mark as the Lady Pioneers led 2-0. The Lady Pioneers and Yellow Jackets went back and forth as we ended up knotted up at 11 all at the media timeout with 4:26 to play in the first quarter.
After another tie, this time at 13 all, GSC made a 15-4 run to end the first quarter as they took a 12 point lead after one, 28-16.
The Yellow Jackets started the second quarter on a 6-2 run as they cut the Lady Pioneer lead to eight at 30-22. Glenville State then made another run outscoring West Virginia State 15-3 to end the quarter. West Virginia State went without a basket for 5:32 minutes as the Lady Pioneer led at the break by 20, 45-25.
Blazie Burgess led GSC with 12 points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting from deep.
In the third, it was more of the same for the Lady Pioneers as they started quarter on 15-6 run racing out to a 60-31 lead with 5:55 to play. It was all GSC in the remainder of the third as they went on to outscore WVSU 35-30 in the quarter and took a 25 point lead into the fourth, 80-55.
The 35 points by GSC in the third broke the MEC Tournament record for most points in a quarter.
West Virginia State ended up outscoring Glenville State in the fourth, 31-25 but the Lady Pioneers proved to be too much as they went on to defeat the Yellow Jackets by 19 points, 105-86.
In total, GSC broke six MEC Tournament records during the contest. The records include: the most Points in a quarter with 35, the most Field Goal Attempts in a game with 110, the most Three-Point Field Goals Made in a game with 17, the most Three-Point Field Goals Attempted in a game with 56, the most Rebounds in a game with 65 and the most Steals in a game with 19.
Glenville State finished the night shooting 36 percent from the field and 30 percent from deep netting 17-of-56 three-pointers. GSC outscored WVSU in the paint 44-40 and won the rebounding battle 65-53.
The Lady Pioneers defense also forced 32 turnovers and converted them into 31 points.
Five Lady Pioneers scored in double figures with Emily Stoller leading the way with 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Blazie Burgess chipped in with 17 points hitting five three-pointers on the evening. Re'Shawna Stone finished with 12 points while Donasja Scott chipped in with 11 points and 13 rebounds as she posted a double-double. Taychaun Hubbard finished the night with 10 points for GSC.
West Virginia State was led by Payton Shears as she scored a game-high 24 points.
Glenville State (27-2), the No. 1 seed now, advances to the MEC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday at 12 p.m. and will take on the No. 4 West Liberty/No. 5 Notre Dame winners.
