Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State (1-0) and first-year Head Coach
Mike Kellar topped the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus University, 33-21, in their 2019 season opener.
Glenville State's defense forced three turnovers while the Pioneer offense racked up 413 yards of total offense in the victory.
Jaylen McNair finished the night 16-of-24 for 180 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground the Pioneers rushed for 233 yards behind a young offensive line. Marion Pender led the way with 83 yards and touchdown.
Darnell Jackson gained 69 yards on 18 carriers.
Austin Ratliff hauled in four passes for 67 yards while
Osai Brown caught two passes for 37 yards while
Edward Webber hauled in his first career touchdown reception as a Pioneer.
Justin Watts had a strong game as he went 4-for-4 on field goals. He connected on field goals from 25, 26, 32, and 40 yards.
Defensively,
Wil Mayes paced the Pioneers with seven tackles while Delonte Hodd finished with six and two interceptions.
For the second week in a row the Pioneers are on the road. This week they travel to West Virginia State University (1-0, 1-0) for a 1 p.m. kick-off with the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets come into the matchup after defeating Frostburg State in their season opener, 20-17.
West Virginia State rallied from a 17-8 deficit in the second half as they ended up scoring 12 points in the third and fourth quarters to come away with the win.
WVSU out-gained Frostburg State, 517-373. Austin Hensley went 18-of-29 for 251 yards and a TD for the Yellow Jackets. Carl Garmon had had 76 yards to lead WVSU on the ground.
Glenville State fell last year to West Virginia State, 31-17.
Since 2008 the Pioneers hold the series advantage over the Yellow Jackets, 8-3. However, WVSU has won the last two meetings.
