Pioneer Football Hosts Concord in Home Opener

Glenville, W.Va.  - Glenville State (1-1, 0-1 MEC) will host the Mountain Lions of Concord University (0-2, 0-2 MEC) in their home opener of 2019 this Saturday. 

The Pioneers are coming off a road loss as fell to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State (2-0, 2-0 MEC), 33-30. 

After trailing 20-3 late in the third quarter the Glenville State Pioneers scored 27 point in the second half of action; however, their comeback would come up short.

Glenville State racked up 414 total yards of offense while West Virginia State finished with 513 total yards of offense as 439 yards came in the air.

Mario Pender rushed for 39 yards on 14 carriers and a touchdown.

Tim Heltzel, who replaced the injured McNair, went 16-for-34 for 214 yards and three touchdowns.

Javon Butler had an excellent day as he hauled in seven passes for 177 yards and three scores.

Defensively, Dominic Cizauskas led GSC with 14 tackles while Jansen King and Tatah Njoka each finished with nine tackles.

Concord comes into the matchup after falling at home to MEC newcomer Frostburg State, 52-14. The win was the first win for the Bobcats at the NCAA Division II level.

Concord had just 245 yards of total offense. 

Kyle Akin was 14-of-23 for 169 yards for Concord. He was picked off once and sacked twice. Joshua Maxwell had 104 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Dwain Porterfield had a game-high 10 tackles on the day.

Since 2008, GSC holds the series advantage 8-3. The Pioneers have also won the last three straight. 

GSC will also look to avoid going 1-2 for the second straight year. 

It's also Hall of Fame Weekend as Glenville State will inductee six new members into the Curtis Elam Hall of Fame on Saturday night. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m. from Morris Stadium.
