Glenville, W.Va. – Glenvilles' senior wideout
Austin Ratliff caught a screen pass from
Timothy Heltzel on the opening play of overtime, taking it 25 yards to the endzone, as the Pioneers defeated the Concord University Mountain Lions 27-20.

Glenville State (2-1, 1-1 MEC) racked up 421 total yards of offense while the Concord (0-3, 0-3 MEC) finished with 236 total yards.

Concord struck first at the 10:27 minute mark on a 23-yard field goal by Luke Walls as they held the early lead in the first quarter, 3-0. The Mountain Lions would eventually take the 3-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Pioneers then knotted the contest up at 3-3. Driving 19 yards on six plays as
Justin Watts nailed a 48-yard field goal at the 11:17 mark.

However, the Mountain Lions answered right back as they then went 75 yards on seven plays as Derek Kincaid scored on a 10 yard run putting Concord up, 10-3 with 6:58 until halftime.

Glenville State again matched the Mountain Lions as they again tied the game up, this time at 10-10, on a 19-yard pitch and catch between
Timothy Heltzel and
Edward Webber as we headed into the break tied up.

The Pioneers took their first lead of the afternoon at the 11:52 minute mark taking the opening possession of the third, 57 yards on five plays, as Heltzel connected on a deep ball, 46-yards, with
Javon Butler putting GSC up, 17-10.

Concord then pulled within four points as Walls hit a 29-yard field goal at the 6:11 minute mark, 17-13.

Glenville State, then finished off the third quarter with a 10 play 58-yard drive ending in a 24-yard field goal by Watts with just two seconds left as GSC led, 20-13 heading into the fourth.

Concord had the only score in the fourth. With the Pioneers driving in Mountain Lions territory Concord's Imani Moore would strip
Javon Butler and take 81-yards for the touchdown as CU knotted it up at 20-20.

Glenville State would have several chances to end it in regulation but a missed 37-yard field goal and then after a Concord interception the Hail Mary came up short as we headed to OT tied at, 20-20.

After the Mountain Lions won the toss, GSC's offense would take the field. It would only take one play as Heltzel found Ratliff on a bubble screen as Austin did the rest of the work taking 25-yards into the endzone as GSC went up, 27-20.

Concord's offense then had a chance to match GSC. After converting a fourth-and-one to get a new set of downs Matt Shearer pass would be intercepted in the endzone by
Delonte Hood as the Pioneers held on in their home opener, 27-20.

The Pioneers rushed for a team total of 88-yards while the Mountain Lions rushed for a 115 as a team. However, GSC accounted for 333 passing yards while the Pioneers defense limited Concord's passing offense to 121 yards.

Glenville State finished the game going 6-of-14 on third downs while Concord went just 2-of-16.

The Pioneers defense came away with three takeaways. All coming in the form of interceptions while Concord's defense had two takeaways, forcing a fumble and an interception.

Mario Pender led the rushing attack as he totted the ball 19 times for 58 yards while
Darnell Jackson rushed for 35 yards on six rushes.

Quarterback
Timothy Heltzel finished the day going 28-of-38 for 333 yards with three touchdown passes and an interception.
Â
Austin Ratliff, Heltzel favorite target on the day, finished with eight catches for 126 yards and a touchdown while
Javon Butler caught six passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Â
Defensively,
Samuel Thomas led the Pioneers with eight tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup.
Jansen King and
Tatah Njoka each recorded seven tackles while Njoka also came away with an interception.Â

Concord was led by Derek Kincaid as he carried the ball eight times for 37 yards and a touchdown.
Â
Matt Shearer went 17-for-39 for 121 yards and Tywan Pearce caught nine balls for 59 yards.
Â
Dwain Porterfield recorded 10 tackles along with a sack to lead the Mountain Lions.

Glenville State (2-1, 1-1 MEC) will hit the road next Thursday, September 26th as they take on the West Liberty University (1-2, 1-2 MEC). Kick-off between the Pioneers and Hilltoppers is slated for 7 p.m.
