Pioneers and Hilltoppers Meet in Thursday Night Clash

Glenville, W.Va. -  Glenvilles' senior wideout Austin Ratliff caught a screen pass from Timothy Heltzel on the opening play of overtime, taking it 25 yards to the endzone, as the Pioneers defeated the Concord University Mountain Lions 27-20. 
 
This week the Pioneers are back on the road as they travel to West Liberty on Thursday. 
 
Glenville State (2-1, 1-1 MEC) racked up 421 total yards of offense while the Concord (0-3, 0-3 MEC) finished with 236 total yards. 
 
The Pioneers rushed for a team total of 88-yards while the Mountain Lions rushed for a 115 as a team. However, GSC accounted for 333 passing yards while the Pioneers defense limited Concord's passing offense to 121 yards. 
  
Glenville State finished the game going 6-of-14 on third downs while Concord went just 2-of-16. 
  
The Pioneers defense came away with three takeaways. All coming in the form of interceptions while Concord's defense had two takeaways, forcing a fumble and an interception. 
  
Mario Pender led the rushing attack as he totted the ball 19 times for 58 yards while Darnell Jackson rushed for 35 yards on six rushes. 
  
Quarterback Timothy Heltzel finished the day going 28-of-38 for 333 yards with three touchdown passes and an interception. 
  
Austin Ratliff, Heltzel favorite target on the day, finished with eight catches for 126 yards and a touchdown while Javon Butler caught six passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. 
  
Defensively, Samuel Thomas led the Pioneers with eight tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup. Jansen King and Tatah Njoka each recorded seven tackles while Njoka also came away with an interception.  
 
West Liberty (1-2, 1-2 MEC) comes into the matchup after falling to Frostburg State last Thursday, 27-24.  
 
Zach Phillips was 12-of-23 for 160 yards with one touchdown but was sacked three times for WLU. D.J. Frisby had 86 yards rushing in the game, the bulk coming on an 85-yard TD run in the second quarter. Logan Deri and Maceo Christmas each had 10 tackles for the 'Toppers, and Ty Holmes had an interception.  
 
Since 2000, GSC holds the series advantage 10-9. However, since joining the MEC the series is tied at 3-3. Glenville State has won the last two meetings including a 33-23 win in 2018.   
 
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. form West Family Stadium.
