Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers went on the road Thursday night and defeated the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers, 33-21 in the I-79 Barrel Classic. It was also the first career win for first-year Head Coach
Mike Kellar.
Glenville State (1-0) rushed for 233 yards on 52 carriers behind a young offensive line. Alderson Broaddus (0-1) rushed for 161 yards but had 235 yards in the air.
Glenville State would take their first two possession of the season and convert them into points. The initial drive would end in three points on a 32-yard
Justin Watts field goal, after the Pioneers converted a crucial fourth down, driving 59 yards on 12 plays as GSC led 3-0.
On the Pioneers next possession Marion Pender would put his stamp on the game as he took it 59 yards to pay dirt as GSC took a 10-0 lead over the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus with 6:33 to play in quarter number one.
Alderson Broaddus would get on the scoreboard at the 1:11 mark as they pulled within three points as Joe Czelusniak hit Damon Rogers on a 35 yard TD pass making it, 10-7.
Glenville State headed into the second quarter leading, 10-7.
In the second quarter the Pioneers would add two more field goals from Watts as he hit from 26 and 25 yards out as GSC took a 16-10 lead into the half.
To start the third, GSC's short squib kick would be recovered by the Pioneers, and again it would end in three points. Watts who hit his fourth field goal of the game this one coming from 40 yards out at the 14:15 minute mark putting the Pioneers up, 19-10.
The Battlers then made it a five point game, 19-14, as Jalen Jackson hauled in a 39 yard touchdown catch from Joe Czelusniak at the 11:35 minute mark in the third.
The Pioneers special teams then made their mark in the contest as
Jonathan St. Jacque blocked the Battlers punt.
Samuel Thomas then scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown as Glenville State led 26-14 with 56 second to go in the third.
Heading into the fourth quarter the Pioneers held a 26-14 lead over Alderson Broaddus.
The Battlers would not go away as Damon Rogers hauled in his second TD pass, this one from 51 yards out, with 13:20 to play as they trailed GSC, 26-21.
However, the Pioneers would extend their lead at the 11:01 mark as McNair hit
Edward Webber in the back of the endzone. It was Webber's first career touchdown catch as a Pioneer as Glenville State defeated the Battlers, 33-21.
Glenville State ran 76 total plays for 413 yards while the Pioneers defense allowed Alderson Broaddus 396 total yards on 54 plays.
Glenville State's defense had three takeaways in the contest. The Pioneers also controlled the game as they dominated the time of possession as they had it for 40:29 while AB had it for 19:31.
Mario Pender led the ground attack as he carried the ball 12 times for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Darnell Jackson rushed for 69 yards on 18 carries.
Jaylen McNair went 15-for-23 for 173 yards and a touchdown.
McNair's favorite target on the evening was
Austin Ratliff as he caught four balls for 67 yards.
Mario Pender also hauled in four passes for 40 yards.
Justin Watts was perfect on the night as he went 4-for-4 on field goals.
Wil Mayes led the Pioneer defense with seven tackles while
Delonte Hood recorded six tackles and two interceptions.
Glenville State (1-0) will hit the road next Saturday, September 14
th when they take on the Yellow Jackets (1-0, 1-0) of West Virginia State University. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
