Pioneers Drop Road Contest at Saint Augustine’s

Raleigh, N.C. – The Glenville State Pioneers had four players score in double figures however it wasn't enough as they fell in their first contest of the new year on the road at Saint Augustine's University, 103-82.

Phil Bledsoe led the Pioneers (8-4) with 17 points. Saint Augustine's (3-9) had four players in double figures with Gray Jefferson leading the way with a game-high 25 points.

How it Happened

First Half:

Early in the first both the Pioneers and the Falcons would go back and forth as they were knotted up at 13-13 at the 13:11 minute mark.

GSC then went on a small 6-4 run as they took a two point lead 19-17 with 11:25 left in the first half. However, SAU then went on a 7-2 run as they took a 24-21 lead with under 10 minutes to play.

The Falcons then made another run as they outscored the Pioneers 13-9 as they held a seven point lead 37-30 at the 6:38 minute mark. Phil Bledsoe then drilled a three-pointer to stop the run at the 6:21 mark pulling GSC within four, 37-33.

Both teams then went on a small scoring drought but Bledsoe drilled two free-throws as the Pioneers now only trailed by three, 39-36 with 4:44 until halftime.

The Pioneers ended the half on an 8-6 run as they went into the break trailing by just one, 45-44.

GSC shot 43 percent from the floor while SAU shot 50 percent from the field.

Phil Bledsoe had 13 points at the break to lead the Pioneers.

Second Half:

In the first 10 minutes of action in the second half the SAU Falcons outscored the Pioneers 28-19 as they took a 10 point lead 73-63 with 9:54 to play.

Glenville State however would battle back and go on an 8-0 run capped off by a Najee Scott three-pointer cutting the Falcons lead to just two points 73-71 with 7:52 left in the contest.

But a pair of three-pointers helped SAU go on an 8-0 run of their own as they went back up by 10 leading GSC 81-71 with 6:06 left to play.

The Falcons then added two more buckets as they took a 14 point lead, 85-71, but GSC's Noah Frampton would drill a three-pointer as he stopped the SAU run and cut the deficit to 11, 85-74 with 4:28 left.

However, in the last four minutes the Falcons would outscore the Pioneer 18 to 6 as GSC fell on the road to Saint Augustine, 103-82.

Inside the Box Score

The Pioneers finished the contest shooting 44 percent from the field and 39 percent from deep going 13-for-33. Saint Augustine's shot an amazing 61 percent from the floor while also shooting 61 percent from deep going 13-for-21.

The Pioneers were out rebounded on the night by the Falcons 43 to 28.

Phil Bledsoe scored a team-high 17 points to go along with eight boards. Noah Frampton chipped in with 13 points and two assists.

Najee Scott and Steven Verplacken each scored 11 points while Verplacken pulled down four rebounds.

Gary Jefferson scored a game-high 25 points for the Falcons while also grabbing six rebounds. Donte Edwards chipped in with 19 points.

The Pioneers will return home to the Waco Center this Wednesday, January 8th as they host the Cardinals of Wheeling University at 7:30 p.m.
