Lady Pioneers Win Third Consecutive MEC Tournament Championship

Wheeling, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers (26-5) won their straight MEC Tournament behind a solid outing from seniors Emily Stoller and Ty Armstrong as well as a great cast of girls as they defeated the Notre Dame College Falcons on Sunday 80-75 from inside the WesBanco Arena.
 
How It Happened
 
First Quarter:
 
Notre Dame struck first early on a Seina Adachi jumper as they went up 2-0 but GSC came right back as Emily Stoller scored her first two-points of the game in the lane as we tied early at 2-2.
 
Emily Stoller and Ty Armstrong then sparked a Glenville State run as they outscored NDC 10-7 as the Lady Pioneers held a three-point lead at 12-9 with 4:25 left in the first quarter. Zakiyah Winfield then drilled a three-pointer as GSC pushed their lead to 15-9.
 
However, Notre Dame pushed the tempo and scored seven quick points in transition as they took a 16-15 lead with 2:00 minute left. The Falcons went on to outscore the Lady Pioneers 11-8 to end the first as NDC held the seven-point lead after one at 27-20.
 
Second Quarter:
 
Notre Dame started the second on a 4-0 run as they went up 31-20 but GSC's Ty Armstrong would end the run with a three-pointer as she made 31-23 at the 7:14 minute mark. NDC then stretched their lead to 12 at 35-23 with under-five to play until the half.
 
The Lady Pioneers would battle back and make a 10-4 run but NDC held the lead at the break 39-33.
 
The shooting woes continued for the Lady Pioneers as they shot 35% from the field and 35% from deep in the first half. Notre Dame shot 55% from the field and 100% from behind the arc making both of their two three-pointers.
 
GSC committed 11 turnovers in the half while the Falcons had 12.  
Third Quarter:
 
GSC got off to a good start in the quarter as Emily Stoller and Ty Armstrong netted back-to-back three-pointers as the Lady Pioneers only trailed by two at 41-39.
 
The Lady Pioneers eventually went on an 11-9 run but still trailed the Falcons by four at the 3:52 minute mark, 48-44.
 
Glenville State the ended the third on another run, this time outscoring NDC 10-7 as the Lady Pioneers headed into fourth trailing by just one, 55-54.
 
Fourth Quarter:
 
The Falcons started the fourth with a three-point play as they led by four, 58-54 at the 8:46 mark. Then two quick buckets on back-to-back possessions for the Lady Pioneers and we were all tied up at 58 all with 7:28 left.
 
Glenville State then took the lead on a huge three-pointer by Emily Stoller as they led 65-62 with 4:43 to play. GSC then got two big defensive stops and converted them into points, in part of a 15-7 run, as they took a seven-point lead at 69-62 with 4:21 to play.
 
GSC then committed several fouls as NDC would get several free-throws and cut the lead down to two 70-68 with under two minutes to play. However, Winfield would answer as she hit two free-throws as they went back up by four, 72-68.
 
NDC would make a run but Ty Armstrong and the rest of the Lady Pioneers would knock down must have free-throws as Glenville State won their third consecutive MEC Tournament Championship defeating the Notre Dame Falcons 80-75.
 
Inside The Box Score
 
Glenville State finished the contest shooting 39% and 35% from deep hitting 10 three-pointers. Notre Dame College shot 48% from the floor and 37% from behind the arc.

GSC won the rebounding battle as they outrebounded NDC by three, 40-37. The Lady Pioneers defense forced NDC into 19 turnovers and converted them into 23 points. GSC had a huge in second chance points outscoring the Falcons 21-6.
 
Emily Stoller, who was the MVP of the tournament, scored a game-high 19 points. Ty Armstrong finished with 18 points hitting three three-pointers while Zakiyah Winfield posted 15 points.
 
Re'Shawna Stone who was a member of the MEC All-Tournament Team finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
 
Notre Dame had two score 19 points apiece in Jennifer Oduho and Jada Marone. Seina Adachi scored 14 points and had six rebounds.

Glenville State will now await to see what seed they will receive in the NCAA DII Basketball Tournament. The selection show will air tonight at 10 p.m. ET on NCAA.com .
