Lady Pioneers 2020-21 Season Set to Start Thursday At West Virginia State

Glenville, W.Va. – Opening the historic Covid-19 season, the Lady Pioneers are set to travel to Institute, W. Va. to tip off against the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State, January 7 at 5:30pm.

The Lady Pioneers, winners of four-straight regular season titles including the 2019-20 season ended with a 26-5 overall and 19-3 MEC conference record.  The Lady Pioneers were scheduled to compete at Gannon University in the NCAA Regional Tournament in early March. Unfortunately, due to the beginning of the catastrophic Covid-19 pandemic, the NCAA canceled the remaining seasons for both Winter and Spring Sports.
 
Glenville State hoops have been tabbed to win the MEC conference title, collecting 120 points and 10 first-place votes in the 2020-21 Pre-Season Poll
 
West Virginia State University was tabbed in the seventh spot in the poll collecting 61 points finishing the 2019-20 season 10-20 overall and 7-16 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets return a trio of double-digit scorers from last year's squad in Charity Shears (16.7 ppg), Chloe Cheresne (12.8 ppg) and Destiny Fields (10.9 ppg).
 
Pioneer Highlights
 
Glenville State returns ten Lady Pioneers from last year's squad including the junior trio; Re'Shawna Stone (16.8 ppg, first team All-MEC last season), Zakiyah Winfield (17.2 points per game and second team All-MEC last season), and Taychaun Hubbard (9.6 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game).
 
Senior Abby Stoller from Fairmont, W.Va. led GSC in rebounding last season totaling 166 last season averaging 5.4 a contest.
 
Victoria Brown, a Brooklyn, NY native enters her senior season after competing with the Lady Pioneers in her first year with GSC hoops. In the 2019-20, she helped Glenville State earn their fourth title averaging 45% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line.
Dazha Congleton and Vendela Danielsson both Division I transfers from Marshall University and Wichita State University are new additions to the GSC hoops program.
 
Coming Up
 
The Lady Pioneers will host their home opener, Sunday January 10 at 2:00pm in the Waco Center against University of Charleston. At this time a no spectator policy will be followed at each of the 12 Mountain East Conference institutions. The league's Board of Directors will evaluate the no spectator policy no earlier than January 19, 2021.
