Pioneers Handle Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON – Glenville closed their football season on a high note Saturday afternoon, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan 43-13 at Cebe Ross Field in Buckhannon. Quarterback Tim Heltzel led the way, throwing four touchdown passes, and the GSC defense held the Bobcats to only 58 net yards on the ground.

Wesleyan led after one quarter 7-3. They snagged the early advantage with Mason Brubeck scoring on a five-yard run. Glenville's initial score was a 20-yard field goal from Josh Jones.

Fortunes flipped in the second quarter, as the Pioneers erupted for 24 points in the frame. The impetus for the explosion came behind the fleet legs of sprinter Javon Butler. Heltzel found Butler on a 41-yard heave to put the Pioneers up 10-7, then followed suit with a 61-yard bomb on the next drive, pushing the lead to 17-7. Glenville's defense continued their dominance on the next Pioneer drive as D'Andre Brown picked off a WVWC pass, setting up the next GSC score; an Alfred Menjor 11-yard jaunt to the end zone, taking the lead to 24-7.

Wesleyan cut the deficit to 24-13 on a five-yard ramble from quarterback Jamir Boyd. Glenville was able to answer, as Heltzel drove the Pioneers down the field in their two-minute offense, setting up Jones for a 28-yard field goal as time expired, closing the half with GSC up 27-13.

Coach Mike Kellar's Pioneers scored a touchdown in each quarter of the second half. Menjor hauled in Heltzel's third TD score of the day on an 11-yard reception over the middle, and in the fourth quarter, Heltzel hit in stride to a streaking Orion Bonner from 45 yards. The finishing touches on the victory was provided by the GSC defense, as Jimmie Simmons tackled Boyd in the end zone for a late Pioneer safety. After the free kick, GSC was able to run out the clock and close the books on the 43-13 victory.

Heltzel was 16-of-26 on the day for 290 yards, and the aforementioned four touchdowns. Butler closed his magical career with four catches for 132 yards and a pair of scores. Tre Gulley, a former WVWC player, led the Pioneers in receptions with five for 51 yards. Menjor led all rushers with 86 yards on 16 carries.

Defensively, Sean Bowers led GSC with seven tackles, followed by Abu KaiKai with five, and Seth Arnold and Ellis Lilly with four each. Brandon Penn complemented Brown's interception with one of his own, his league leading seventh pick. Bower and Brown both recorded sacks as a precursor to Simmons' late safety.

Overall, the Pioneers passed for 322 yards, and rushed for 205. This strong balanced attack enabled them to lead the tally in total yardage 507-190.

Glenville closes the campaign 3-7. Wesleyan ends their season 0-11.
