Box Score Charleston, W.Va. - GSC Lady Pioneers (9-1) hold on in final seconds as they defeat the University of Charleston (13-2), 83-81.
Zakiyah Winfield set a new career record with 36 points while tallying her sixth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.
How It Happened
First Quarter:
In the first two minutes of play, the Golden Eagles gained a quick 7-0 lead.
Dazha Congleton put the Lady Pioneers on the board first with a short teardrop as Re'Shawna Stone then tied the contest at nine all by adding a five-point conversion.
Entering an 11-3 run the Golden Eagles slowly pulled away from the Blue and White until
Zakiyah Winfield added a jumper and a pair from the stripe trailing 24-16 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter:
Zakiyah Winfield and
Jada Mitchell both sunk three balls from
Kaylee Pierce and
Mashayla Cecil to open the second.
UC then pulled away 34-26 until GSC answered on a 7-0 run with a three ball from Cecil. Winfield added a fair form the stripe to tie the match at 37 all. The half would end on a UC 5-0 run to send hold the Lady Pioneers 42-37.
At the half, GSC shot 43% from the field while shooting 7-for-7 at the free throw line as UC shot 17-for-40 from the floor while bringing down 21 rebounds.
Third Quarter:
Out of the half the Golden Eagles gained a ten-point lead until
Abby Stoller sunk a tear drop to pull back within singles. Trading baskets, the Golden Eagles held their double-digit lead throughout the half.
Jada Mitchell added a pair form the stripe as with Re'Shawna Stone and
Zakiyah Winfield adding two layups to trail 57-67.
Fourth Quarter:
Kaylee Pierce sunk a three ball from
Abby Stoller as
Zakiyah Winfield added a layup to pull within five. UC continued to accumulate to their score until
Dazha Congleton and
Taylor Smith both hit a triples to pull within one 71-70.
UC then pulled away again 77-71 until the Mitchell scored a layup and triple to pull back within three. Stone then connected on a three-point conversion to tie the contest 79 all.
Tied again at 81 all, GSC gained their first lead of the ball game as Winfield added a pair of freebies at the stripe which resulted in an 83-81 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Inside The Box Score
The Pioneers shot 40% from the floor and totaling eight triples and 47 rebounds while tallying 16 second chance points and 22 bench points.
Re'Shawna Stone tallied 15 points while bringing down seven rebounds and three steals.
Jada Mitchell chipped in with 14 points and added five defensive rebounds with two steals and an assist.
The Golden Eagles also shot efficiently with 44% from the floor and 36% from deep while holding the lead the entire game until the final minute of action. UC was lead by Erykah Russell with 26 points, 12 rebounds and two steals.
