Lady Pioneers Soar Past Falcons, Combats Charleston for Tournament Title

Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – Advancing to the Championship Contest, Glenville State flew past the Falcons of Notre Dame College 88-69 to now face off against the University of Charleston tomorrow at 1:00pm.  

How It Happened

First Quarter:

Trailing 8-4 early in the first, Mashalya Cecil would pull the Lady Pioneers within one with a three ball from deep. GSC would then take the lead as Re'Shawna Stone then drove a layup in the paint off an NDC turnover.

Abby Stoller then pushed GSC ahead by opening a 9-0 run leading 15-8 going into the first media break.

Notre Dame then ended their four-minute scoring drought as Zakiyah Winfield then picked up a long ball three to lead 20-13.

GSC extended their lead to double figures at 27-15 by scoring two layups driven by Dazha Congleton and Taychaun Hubbard.

Second Quarter:

Starting the second GSC held a 2:31 scoring pause before Jada Atkinson scored a tear drop. Couple freebies and a three ball from Vendela Danielsson would hold the Blue and White 38-27.

Then from Winfield to Cecil, Mashayla sunk a three ball from deep behind the arc with Zakiyah soaring past NDC adding a tear drop ending the second with GSC up 43-32.

At the half Glenville State held a 40% shooting margin while sinking four shots from deep, taking 11 steals from the Falcons. Notre Dame, similar to GSC also shot 39% from the floor with four deep buckets.  

Third Quarter:

Opening the second half was Winfield and Hubbard with two layups and freebie opening a 10-2 run for Glenville State. In the run, Kaylee Pierce connecting with Winfield for a long shot three ball.

From there the Lady Pioneers added a 9-0 run to accumulate to their score sitting 60-42 ahead of the Falcons.

Then with seconds rolling down the clock, Stoller found Winfield behind the arc for a rimless three ball ending the third 65-48.

Fourth Quarter:

Winfield added two layups to start the fourth each in the paint, as Jada Mitchell then scored a three ball, all nothing but net to lead 72-56.

Then shooting five of the last five field goals, GSC would force NDC to an offensive hold over four minutes of play. Stone picked up a short jumper with a long three ball from Hubbard and two freebies from Winfield to end the contest 88-69.

Inside The Box Score

By the end of the contest, GSC efficiently improved to shooting 47% from the floor while netting eight long three balls and forcing the Falcons into 21 turnovers.

Zakiyah Winfield led the pack with 25 points on the day while also connecting with some Pioneers for five assists and three steals.

Dazha Congleton and Abby Stoller chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively, with Congleton taking three steals and Stoller adding game high eight rebounds.
Jada Atkinson brought down five rebounds as Mashalya Cecil netted eight on the day.

Coming Up

Glenville State will now take on the University of Charleston in the Mountain East Conference Tournament in the Championship Game, March 7 at 1:00pm.
