Glenville State enters Week Two of the 2021 Mountain East Conference schedule sporting a 1-0 record. After a hard-fought 17-10 home opener over Concord, the Pioneers will now travel south to face the UNC-Pembroke Braves.
Â
Pembroke enters the contest 1-1 and 1-0 in the MEC. Last week, Pembroke took the deep and talented Findlay squad to overtime before losing to the Oilers in heartbreak fashion 34-28. Pembroke was picked fourth in the MEC preseason coaches' poll, and earned their first league win of the season via forfeit over West Virginia Wesleyan.
Â
Glenville's defense made its share of big plays in the victory over Concord. The star of the night for Coach
Mike Kellar's squad was
Jonathan St. Jacque, who produced a total of four sacks and also forced two fumbles under the Morris Stadium lights. Defensive Coordinator
Brian Hill's defense continued to make key plays in the second half to preserve the GSC victory.
Â
Offensively, Glenville's
Javon Butler hauled in 11 passes for 147 yards. Quarterback Timothy Heltzel was 14-of-25 through the air for 208 yards, including the game-winner to
Tre Gulley midway through the fourth quarter.
Â
With the heat for Glenville's southern-most contest, the contest has been set for a later start. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM at Pembroke's Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
