GLENVILLE – Coach Mke Kellar's Glenville State Pioneers return home this weekend, hosting the Wheeling Cardinals at Morris Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:00 noon on GSC's Hall of Fame Weekend.
It will be a weekend of honoring history for the football program as two members of Glenville's 1973 National Runner-up are being inducted; Jim Carter and Mark Reger.
Glenville's current team is hoping to make some history of its own in 2021, and this Saturday's game with the Cardinals looms as a big day for each squad. The Pioneers enter the contest 1-1 overall and in the league. Wheeling is 1-2 overall, and also 1-1 in the MEC. GSC is coming off a hard-fought 36-22 loss at UNC-Pembroke in the rain, while Wheeling defeated Alderson-Broaddus 28-6 in a game played on the WU campus.
Glenville's offense has been led by senior receiver
Javon Butler, who has caught 12 passes on the season for 224 yards, including an electrifying 77-yard touchdown last week. He is currently second in the league in receiving yards per game with 112.0 yards per game.
Defensively,
Jonathan St. Jacque leads the Mountain East with a total of five quarterback sacks. Teammate
Shaun Sterling is third in the league in passes defended, while linebacker
Seth Arnold is third in total tackles with 19 (9.5 tpg). Both Glenville's defense and also Wheeling's are in the top third of the MEC of rushing defense, yielding an identical 98.0 yards per game.
These two teams played for the first time in week nine of the 2019 MEC season. Wheeling established a 14-0 halftime lead that day at Morris Stadium, but the Pioneers rallied for 24 second half points to secure an exciting 24-14 victory. Saturday's game will be available via live stream at
