Football to Host Concord Thursday Night

GLENVILLE – Football season is back!

Glenville State College opens their 2021 season Thursday night, hosting the Concord Mountain Lions at Morris Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.

Coach Mike Kellar and his staff last posted a full season in the Pre-Covid Era of 2019, and finished strong to close a 7-4 campaign. Several key players from that team remain, but a host of newcomers are currently on the roster that the staff are hoping can make significant impacts this Fall. This includes some key high school signees as well as several talented transfers and grad transfers.

Senior Javon Butler is back to close his stellar career. He has career totals of 132 receptions, 2088 yards, and 25 touchdowns. He is in the top five on every GSC All-Time list and the two-sport star is prepped to move even higher on these lists. He was Second-Team All-MEC back in 2019.

Wide Receiver Zay Huff earned Second-Team All-MEC as well in last Spring's shortened four-game season. He registered team highs of 20 receptions, 288 yards, and three touchdowns. Freshman Ian Pomeroy earned MEC Honorable Mention honors on the offensive line last Spring, and is back on a revamped offensive line.

Concord is coached by former GSC star and Pioneer Hall of Famer Dave Walker. This will be Walker's first full year at the helm of the Mountain Lions as they were only able to play one game last Spring (going 1-0).

Kellar, the former GSC quarterback, has materialized an impressive career as a college head coach. He has accumulated 58 wins and coached multiple NCAA playoff teams. For Kellar, this Fall also marks a reunion with his good friend and former GSC great Brian Hill, who has returned to GSC as Defensive Coordinator. He also serves GSC as their Director of Multi-Cultural Affairs.

"Our kids are excited to be playing again," Kellar noted. "We have been through a lot to get to this point, and the kids cannot wait to be playing under the lights. To have our fans fully back, it means a lot. We are excited to have the college and alumni back in the stands, and our supporters from here in Gilmer County."

Glenville leads the All-Time Series 42-33-1.
